It’s not a sequel. In fact there was talk of it being a prequel, however that was the developer’s take and wasn’t to be considered cannon despite the similarities which both games share.

On Playstation.com it says that it is a sequal. and it does take place after ICO, because i beleive near the end of ICO(havent beaten it, but my fried said this before SotC even came out) The chick dies and you steal the sword and run away. so then at the end of Shadow, the kings men from the begining of ico, come and try to kill you for freeing all of the spirits and granting their wish to become whole again. so it is a sequal. im 90% sure of that

I’d put it less bluntly, but I’m afraid I’m not in the mood. You’re friend is either full of shit or just simply misinterpreted the game.
An interview with the creator
His exact words are I didn’t intend the boy to be the same as in ICO. Yes, users have thought that Shadow of the Colossus is a prequel to ICO, and that’s my idea as well. I wanted to make it so the imagination is up to the user.
He says that it wasn’t his intent for them to be connected, but he sees it that way. However it’s really meant to be judged by the person’s, who played it, imagination.

He did say that it’s up to the player, which means officially they’re only connected. Take this for example.
Final Fantasy 10 occurs in the same timeline as Final Fantasy VII. One of the characters, Shinra, uses a space ship to fly from his world to another in order to test out a machine that would gather matter from the Farplane and convert it into energy to use.
What he created was the Mako Reactor and his descendants were the people who founded the Shinra Electric Power Company in Final Fantasy VII. However, FF10 is not considered a prequel to FF7.
It’s the same principal here.

Actually, the horned boy in the ICO game is of a specific race of people. In fact it mentions somewhere in the game that other people born with horns were generally sacrificed and considered to be evil.

ya see, i got bored halfway through ICO so i never finished it. i wouldnt know that. just everyone i talked to about the game always said it was a sequal but then i read an article online like 2 months ago and they say its more of a prequal, so its preaty much up to the gamer weather its a prequal, sequal, or neither.
