How Long Will it Take for 60GB PS3 to Sell Out?

We know that the 60gb has underwent a $100 pricedrop in the Americas. And we know that Sony has discontinued the 60gb version. So the question is how long do you think it’ll take for Sony to sellout of the 60gb so they’ll no longer be available in Americas.

Before taking a guess there are some interesting things to note. Sony has shipped 2.6 million PS3’s to the Americas as of the end of March 2007. At the end of March 2007 Sony had actually sold about 1.3 million of those PS3’s in the Americas.

Now as of the end of June 2007 we know that PS3 has sold about 1.57 million PS3’s. Now that’s a lag of just a little bit under 1 million. But the shipments aren’t up to date with the numbers. Sony’s financial report for shipments as of the end of June 2007 should be coming in about a week. There we’ll see how much has been shipped in the Americas thus far.

I couldn’t evne take a guess to tell you how many were shipped cuase I don’t know if Sony was still overshipping or what. But only one more thing to note about taht 1 million lag we have already with previous Sony shipments. About 10% of that was probably 20gbs which were discontinued 3-4 months ago. So about 900,000 PS3’s as we know are left available in the PS3. I guess I will take a guess to help those out that about 500,000 more were shipped.

So there are estimated 1.4 million PS3 60gb’s left in the Americas. And we know it has been discontinued. How long do you think it’ll take for Sony to sell out of these.

If I had to take a guess I’d say Xmas.

I agree, i say Xmas, or maybe even longer.

Isn’t the 80 gig dropping it’s price after the 60 gig is sold out?

Yes Sony seems to think they’ll all be gone by the end of the summer but I doubt that at all. 1.4 million to actually sale in 2 months. Not only that but the opening week, which is a peak when things like this happen, only sold 40k. Sony just was really looking for a bright future.

So yea December or after Christmas I think it’ll happen.

But this also brings out another dilemna. Will 60gb’s, because they are better priced and will still be on the market for a while, will that affect sales of the 80gb which is set to make it’s appearance in August.

That’s a rumor. But I’d assume that sooner or later Motorstorm will be dropped and then a pricedrop.

i’m am just trying to figure out how many consoles sony has sold on average per month.

But that’s interesting if the 60gb with a better price is out during with the 80gb then there could be a sales confliction where 60gb starts putting the 80gb sales down. Which if this happens retailers will take smaller to closer to none orders of the 80gb cause people want 60gb and it’s saling slow as it is. And if Sony continues to produce but unable to ship then they will once again have units sitting in their warehouses causing massive losses.

Then Sony would need to drop Motorstorm and lower the price of the PS3 but if the 60gb is avaialbe they can’t do that. And they can’t discontinue the product from stores. Once they sale it to retailers it’s out of their hands. Meaning they would have to then again lower the price of the 60gb so that the 80gb could be released at a lower price.

So this whole thing could really start to get intriguing, difficult, and somewhat troubling from Sony’s perspective. And if they have to drop the price of those 2 SKU’s this year they will undergo such massive losses that it could start looking grim.

Normally the PS3 sales on average of 17k-18k a week in the Americas. In it’s first week with the pricedrop it sold 40k, and in it’s second week it’s looking to go down to about 30k-35k. And if it decreases after that again then you’ll know that the pricedrop means nothing but it could level off there as well. So it’s hard to tell right now with the pricedrop.
