2 things wrong with this title and I suggest a mod changes it so know one is confused.

For one it’s 4.28 million. This has been a common mistake and by easily checking Sony’s financial report you’ll see how large of one it really is.

Secondly it’s shipped not sold. Sony says it’s shipped but to them it is shipped. Remember they sell them to retailers thuse they will call them units sold.

As someone said earlier approximately 3.8 million have actually been sold to consumers.

Well that’s understandable but there have been a lot of respectable sites posting these misunderstood and fales numbers up lately so the misunderstanding on your part is understood.

But if any of these sites new how to read and or add they’d have known is 4.28 million units of PS3 shipped as of the end of June 2007.

yea here’s a part of Sony’s financial report to show how this site is wrong:

http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/07q1_eleki.pdf

If you read under the Playstation Hardware thing you’ll see these that if you add the numbers up for PS3 which is 3.57 and .71 you’ll get 4.28. All numbers in millions of course.

Also if you read where the star on the heading of that part takes you it states Sony is as of now counting recorded sales instead of production shipments. So before they used to count how many were produced and then shipped to THEIR warehouses. Now they are counting recorded sales which is how many they sell to retailers. Better known to us as shipments.

21 gamer seems to think they actually have sold 4.4Mil to consumers. Sony aims at retailers, and yes, they have sold THAT many, but not to consumers themselves.

No they didn’t lie when they said they sold 4.28 million units of PS3. From Sony’s perspective they have sold 4.28 million units of the PS3. But who does Sony sell PS3’s to? They sell them to retailers NOT consumers. From our perspective when Sony sells units to retailers, we call them shipments. To us Sony shipped 4.28 million units but to Sony they sold 4.28 million units. Understand. That’s why they say sold but in reality to everyone else it’s shipments.

But the console wars is based off shipments cuase those are the 100% accurate numbers.

21gamer doesn’t know a damn thing about financial reports nor how to read them. This is something I happen to know about and know a few others that know about it. It’s 4.28 million shipped as of the end of June 2007. Sony says they sold 4.28 million cause they sold 4.28 million units to retailers. We call that shipments. It’s really not hard to understand at all.

Great. You catch on quick. Usually it takes most people days are so to get this down and I wonder why. How hard is it really to understand the difference between shipments and sales and then seeing why in context companies would call shipments sales. It’s really not hard at all. So glad you understand it. Quick learner my young padawan.

Well I’d love to say I am but GG has quite a strong knowledge in this field as well and he probably would have told these nuts on here and the console wars thread the same thing I did. But I do know a lot about the economical side of gaming.

well its not that hard. actually zucas, you told it very well. now let me make sure i understand it. “ahem”, in sonys perspective, when they give or sell it to a retailer, they count it as if a consumer bought it. where as microsoft and nintendo count it only when a consumer buys it.

is that good? lol.

Well you heard wrong. Sony CONFIRMED in their end of Q1 of the fiscal year ending March 2008 that they have shipped 4.28 million units of PS3’s as of the end of June 2007. It’s in the link, which is directly to a portion of their finance report, a few posts up.

Um close. But not there yet. Sony sells their units of PS3’s and other products to retailers. So meaning a retailer orders so many units of the product and Sony ships it to them. Of course the retailer has to buy it there.

So sony sells them to the retailer. Meaning anything that happens to those shipments of PS3’s after means nothing to Sony as they have already sold them. But to everyone else these have been shipped to retailers and not ACTUALLY sold to consumers yet. See the difference and see how Sony’s perspective would lead them to say them as sold cuase they technically are. Remember how many units of any product is sold to the consumer means nothing financially to the mother company. Becuase that money made off those sales to consumers goes to the retailer, not the mother company.

So that is why it won’t ever be in a financial report cause units sold to consumers have no effect whatsoever on the mother company of the product. That is why it’s 4.28 million PS3’s sold in Sony’s perspective cause they sold 4.28 million PS3’s to retailers. IN our perspecitive it’s 4.28 million shipped.

Hope I’m not confusing anyone with my explanations. I should try and keep it simple. So simply put Sony sells Ps3’s to retailers which is why they call them sold units. But in reality it’s shipments to us cause it hasn’t been sold to the consumer yet. Simply put as that.
