NO it says only 3.6 million were in stores. Meaning only 3.6 million had been shipped. And that was rounded up cause the actual number was 3.57 million.
That quote from teh article explains the exact misconception I’ve been working so hard to explain to numerous people.
Well I’m tired of this so believe what you want but the facts are there.

By that the 5.5 million was still there and that would mean that the claimed number 'produced' you said earlier has to be wrong.
I meant produced.

It’s not 100% accurate just like every other actual sales to consumers tracking agency but it basically compiles data from retailers and then estimates the rest through trends and other techniques.

I don’t even understand what your saying haha. I mean you need to explain a little more clearly cause I’m not getting at what your meaning. The article said 5.5 million had been produced and only 3.6 million of that had actually made it to retailers. Another fancy way of saying only 3.6 million had been shipped. That’s for the march 2007 financial report. I mean its pretty clearly stated.
But I’m not understanding what your quote is getting at.
Just look at the pic. It explains everything nicely. Sony use to show production shipments and now they are showing shipments to retailers and VGCharts shows units sold to consumers.

Ok guys here’s the deal. I once had to explain this before, and looks like I’ll have to explain it again. So please absorb it....
When MS, Sony and Nintendo say they’ve SOLD 5 million consoles, it means they SOLD TO RETAILERS ONLY. A retailer like wal-mart has paid Sony money, has BOUGHT, let’s say, 100,000 360’s. At that moment, MS says “we have sold 100,000 units”. But, this does not represent how many consoles have actually been bought by consumers. Wal-mart over the course of a month may have sold 50,000 360s. Still 50,000 unsold. But, they make another order from MS, and pay them money for another 100,000 360’s. MS now reports “We have sold 200,000 360’s”. And over the month, maybe Walmart has only sold another 20,000 consoles. At that point....MS has SOLD (to retailers) 200,000 units, and they report this as such in their accounts. But only 70,000 may have actually sold to consumers.
The reason why it’s impossible to track down guesstimate numbers for how many consoles were sold to consumers is because there’s a billion shops and ebay stores etc out there in the world. No one can EVER officially track down how many consoles sold to consumers. Sure, Walmart can provide info, so too can eb-games, and amazon, etc. And companies like NPD try to get numbers from as many big stores as possible to give a rough idea.
Remember, Walmart would keep track of how many 360s they sold to customers, so too would eb-games, and amazon, but there’s millions of shops, stores, and retailers out there that MS has sold their 360’s to, but which do not report their own sales, or do not allow companies like NPD to track their sales numbers.
A reason they all dont do this is for tax reasons. Many smaller shops like to fudge their numbers so they dont have to pay as much tax, so they dont like to give out info to record keeping companies like NPD. Or, NPD etc just has no way to collect data from a million stores around America, let alone the whole world.
So...to summarize....
MS, Sony, Nintendo...when they say they SOLD 10 million consoles....it means they SOLD TO RETAILERS. SOLD TO RETAILERS is another term for SHIPMENTS or SHIPMENTS SOLD.
Let’s assume Sony produced 10 million consoles, but walmart, ebgames etc only ORDERED and BOUGHT 8 million consoles from them all up. Sony would say “we produced 10 million consoles, but have SHIPPED 8 million consoles”....SHIPPED = Sold to retailers = sold. The other 2 million is sitting in warehouses waiting to be BOUGHT from retailers like ebgames, etc. BUt it has not yet been sold to them.
The problem is, that in the past Sony used to report the 2 million sitting in warehouses into their SOLD number, because they used to fudge the numbers for tax reasons etc. But they recently changed to the right way of doing things.
So, essentially....Sony said they’d try to produce 6 million consoles this fiscal year. They managed to only produce 5.5 million roughly. Of that 5.5 million ONLY 4.28 million has actually SOLD (SHIPPED) to retailers. Only 4.28 PS3s have been BOUGHT by retailers. Ie there are 1.21 million PS3s sitting in warehouses waiting to be bought by retailers like walmart etc. They will buy them when they make another order. When they run out of PS3’s in their shops.
No one knows exactly how many of those 4.28 million have been bought by customers, by people. We can ONLY know that 4.28 million were literally bought by retailers and that 4.28 million were shipped by Sony to retailers.

You need to explain more clearly because you’re just throwing out random stuff.

What both of you have said has nothing to do with the question. Just forget it. if nobody can answer the question then there’s nothing anybody can do.
