So what’s the real difference? You seem to create models for structures, isn’t that what architects do?
No. An architect will basically design the appearance of the building. A structural Engineer will put all the structural components into the architects design. Okay, think of a human body as a building...An architect will design the appearance and dimensions of the body while Structural would put the bone structure, ligament, joints, cartilage, muscle, etc to support the body’s weight and stress forces.
Ah... I see. Well in that case I see how the two differ greatly. Seems like hard work, but I bet the pay is excellent. You probably make in a month what I make in 6 months.
You know, first time I heard it referred to “erection drawing”, I laughed. Erection Drawings are basically like an instruction manual on how to build/erect the building. It identifies where each “member” lol, is located. Kind of like an instruction book on how to build a tent identifying each piece and where they go.

It seems like a car garage, but you can never tell.
Well, there is an underground parking facilty at the base of the building while the main level above and the roof is a inpatient care facility addition to a hospitol.
Sometimes I get pretty cool jobs such as the Pac Bell Park stadium for the San Francisco Giants I did a lot of work on that.
There was the Terminator 2 theme park steel I did for Universal Studios Florida.
Also the Air Force One at the Ronald Regean Presidential Library.
Here’s a snap shot of that. You can see Air Force One in plan view. That was a pretty cool job.
It seems like most of the jobs I get lately have been government work like military training facilities, bureau buildings etc. I think the most gratifying part of my work is going to the job site when it completely erected. There’s nothing like seeing your design a reality in physical full scale realism. That’s always fun.

I’m glad I changed from my Civil Engineering major. Using AutoCAD is a pain in the behind.
Haha
AutoCad is a basic program costing around $3 thousand USD. I use a 3-d modeling software costing up to $60 thousand USD. However, I did use AutoCad occasionally. I hope you didn’t spend too much time in Civil Engineering because in no way does structural engineering look like civil. Civil is based on roads, parking lots, etc.
I learned how to use AutoCad when I went to a school in Canada.

Oh, and just to stir shit up... In my professional opinion, I do look at the “demolition” of the 9/11 world trade center buildings with skepticism.
HA ! THANK-You !
Wait do you mean the conspiracy theory that it was a controlled demolition or the collapsing of the buildings themselves?
What is your opinion honestly I need to hear from someone who actually knows what they are talking about?
Because with all due realism the collapsing of tower 7, the one people dont really know about) looks exactly like the controlled demolitons I’ve seen on TV(the center core being blown first to prevent structural damage to surrounding buildings). On top of that, tower 7 wasn’t even struck by a jet ?
Even more so, architects who designed the building , claim the building was designed to withstand the impact of a 757 Boeing hitting it.
Even MORE so,with my own research, the “Pancake theory” still wouldn’t allow the towers to fall at freefall speeds, the towers fell at an average of 10 floors per second.
