Why are grindcore songs always so short?
It’s entirely because you touch yourself at night.
But seriously, although song lengths depend upon the band, I think that the short songs work quite well for most grindcore. It’s harsh, angry, often politically inclined, etc. It doesn’t take away from my enjoyment/appreciation of the genre - for example, D.R.I. is one of my favorite bands at the moment, and Dealing With It consists of 25 songs with a length of 33 minutes.
Regarding the Agoraphobic Nosebleed lyrics - I really don’t know. Part of it suggests that it’s an allegory for a police state - “Listen to the night as it hovers overheard” perhaps symbolizes the whirring sound of helicopters, while the laughing adds a sinister tone to the lyrics. I’ve never heard “concussion” used in that context, but they could be talking about anything from a bomb blast to a head injury/loss of memory.
The last three lines don’t make sense unless “Scowl” is followed by a comma; in that case, I think it’s an attack on the military/police + yet another depiction of the aforementioned police state (i.e., by invoking the image of a man clad in full gear, gas mask on, gassing the masses).
EDIT: I just looked on google, and it appears that “scowl mask” can simply refer to a facial expression (i.e. a scowl), so ignore that last bit.
“Tighter the fit the better” is really self-explanatory - the more hatred, the better, etc.
Of course, it could just be an allegory for paranoia or somebody’s mental condition, but that’s the best that I can do.
Finally, has anybody else heard the new Mirrorthrone? I don’t like it quite as much as Carriers of Dust, but it’s still incredibly awesome.
Well, for me, in Grindcore, the music is good and everything, but the shortness of the songs takes away the enjoyment for me, like as if they were not working very hard on it. Kinda makes me think that creativity is kind of limited in Grindcore. Tablature in it is simple, except for the drumming (which unfortunately, they usually cheat using drum machines)I don’t know, just the length of the songs annoy me because of how short they are.
I don’t think that the length of a song has very much to do with creativity - although this is the second time that I’ve used them as an example, DRI are considered to be real innovators in hardcore and crossover despite their first two albums having generally very short songs. Well, whatever, I don’t listen to much grindcore anyway.
It really depends upon the band, and even with really great bands, there’s usually some boring, uninspired stuff in their discography (see: Agathocles).
Also, how is using a drum machine cheating? If you can’t find a drummer/don’t want to go through the effort of getting one, then using a drum machine is perfectly fine (you’d use one for shows anyway). Of course, it goes without saying that I’d much prefer a real drummer in most cases.
Finally, LISTEN TO FUCKING MIRRORTHRONE.
--- We will set out with a fire in our hearts/When this darkness gives way to the dawn/In the light we are united as one/For the kingdom of heaven must be taken by storm!

Also, I’d like to point out that The Project Hate MCMXMCIX use a drum machine, as have Meshuggah. And they’re both awesome.
Edit: Holy triple post, Batman. I should slap myself for that.
A lot of Grindcore is like that because of its Punk influence, but there are a lot of Grindcore bands with very complex drum work, like the Agoraphobic Nosebleed song I posted.
I mean, it’s good, always would be, but it’s not an instant hit I think.
It’s got kind of a Morningrise-ish feel to it, which is a great place to return to I think. Very, very dark.
Axe is definately very competent.
I heard their new drummer isn’t nearly as good as the former.
Not even close. Martin Lopez was an integral part of Opeth’s sound, although more prevalent on softer parts. He’s got such groove and tasteful playing, whereas Axe just hammers away.
Still, Axe is thoroughly capable.
I heard one of their leaked songs had blast beats. (I still don’t know exactly what blast beats are but I think I have an idea)

Blast beats if I am thinking of the right thing, are beats that usually are complex drum notes played over and over really fast to increase intensuty. Flo does it alot.

Lol, just listen to any extremely brutal death metal song, or any cryptopsy song. Those parts that sound very very very fast are blast beats.
Ahh I see, speaking of Cryptopsy, I finally downloaded the whole entire None So Vile album. I want to download some Deathspell Omega but I can’t find any songs on Limewire or anything, I would just buy the album If I could fucking find one anywhere. (I hate downloading music for free, just feel really bad about it.)

They are complex notes, but are repeated over and over again. Completely different from what I was saying. It was just a couple notes played over and over again, just a complex one, like the double bass, snare and symbols at the same time rather than individual drums being repeated.
