I remember my only concern on Sept 11, 2001 was hoping that’d we’d get out of school early.
*EDIT* All I could really think was... “It’s about time”
And we did get out early that day.
Oh, and I was also concerned for the family of certain friends
My mother was in the Pentagon 5th floor E ring when it was hit; probably about 30 feet almost directly below her. This was an office in the outer ring and she said that immediately the windows blew out and the floor dropped about 2 feet.
(I worked in that office the summer of 2001 and got her the interview there when I left)
With the floor dropping and smoke everywhere she was too panicked to do anything. One of the larger men there, his name was Ward, a fellow D&D nerd, carried my mother over his shoulder out of the office. When they went to exit the building there was a pillar of smoke towards the direction of the closer (and newly renovated) exit. They had to go a much longer way through a zone that was still under construction.
I did not see my mother until about 9pm that evening. when I saw her she was bruised and covered in soot. It was a pretty scary day.
You were in the pentagon?
I worked there every summer from 2001 to 2006 as an intern.
O sweet! What did ya do?
I was a 'legal assistant.' I basically read lots of boring legal documents, prepped witnesses and did all the boring stuff so the hot-shot government lawyers could have all the fun. ---
