Have you tried sticking in a recovery disc?
Have you tried repairing the xp installation by inserting the cd and restarting?
Have you tried starting the computer in safe mode?
Do you have a anti virus?
Have you installed any new programs before the crash?

If you haven’t installed any new software and it wont go o safe mode, I would say one of your components has burned out.
Give your computer a sniff and see if it smells burnt.

That would be my next guess yeah.
Something on the motherboard has gone the way of the dodo.
Now I am no expert in diagnostics, so I can’t be much help...perhaps take it to a comp tech guy to get it sorted.
