shocked like the Patriot Act? Wiretapping? The government’s right to search your home and business without your knowledge and consent or even a warrant?

And what “freedoms” are we lacking? We have a better social system (funded health care, etc.) and we certainly don’t have to worry about our government spying on us without due legal course...or throwing us in Guantanomo Bay without any charges being made.

wait wait wait wait wait wait wait HOLD THE PHONE.

Canada has a government?

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?

well a couple years ago some of the clan elders of each Province got tired of eating seal meat and freezing in our Government Igloo, so they decided to have something called an Elexion or some such thing like that? Next year they’re going try to let women vote, but we still aren’t sure on that one

....

Women? Voting? HAH!

I don’t know what you kooky Canucks are thinking anymore!

it’ll give us a chance to drink Tim Hortons Coffee and play hockey in peace

assuming our dog sleds can handle the Arctic conditions *nod*

Tim Hortons coffee is GOD compared to Starbuck’s.

tell Etain that, she has this thing for Starbucks {I blame her American Mother personally}

oohhh I’m not gonna live that one down

*slaps James* (ok not really) Actually my American mother won’t even drink coffee wink.

Baybee - well I drink my coffee strong, sweet and with soya milk. So dunno how my ventricle could slam shut? wink James - no comment on the sweet part! It’s the only time I consume sugar...so I just make up for it in coffee.

Actually my absolutely favourite coffee is a Canadian, organic, free-trade brand.

Also, Baybee...since we’ve been joking about American ignorance in this thread, if there’s anything we equal Americans in it’s our ignorance of Native issues and living conditions...

Actually most Americans I’ve met have told me they thought Toronto was the capital of Canada. We may act like we are, but we’re not lol. If you asked them the name of our prime minister...they had no clue. And until we corrected them, my American cousins thought Ontario was part of the US lol.

I could go on with my American tourist stories...

Actually, I would have thought Toronto was Canada’s capital (still don’t know, I would need to look it up) and I hove no idea who Canada’s prime minister is. Why should Americans need to know any of this? It’s not like it’s high our “important facts to know” list.

Ottawa is canada’s capital, and it isn’t so much “important facts to know” in relationship to your life, or that of Americans in general. It just shows the general disinterest in anything outside your borders.

it isn’t important that I should know John Howard is the Prime Minister of Australia, or Tony Blair the Former PM of england,or Gordon Brown the new one... But I do

Kim Il Jung, being the insane leader of North Korea should be a little important, cause he’s a nutcase. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the Iran whacko too.

Stephen Harper, the Canadian Prime Minister being a Bush-cronie however *is* important.. to *me*. But I wouldn’t expect him to be elsewhere.

But knowledge in things outside your “homeland” is still important, seeing as without knowledge of the world around you, many grow up to think things like the True Sonic Wind. *chuckles at the “complete and utter freedom” comment*

If you can’t see a car that’s about to hit you, you won’t really care until it does, and if it doesn’t then what does it matter... right? That is until it hits someone you care about. but the majority of Canadians, just because we are Canadian, do care.

for example, I am on Disability because my Multiple Sclerosis, and barely make ends meet. but 2 months ago I went to http://spreadthenet.org/default_en.aspx and spent $20 on 2 mosquito nets, to send to children in Africa, to prevent Malaria and West Nile Virus and all that. I’ll never see, meet, or get thanked by whoever uses those nets. But I still did it, and over 500,000 nets have been bought in the last 6 months by canadians who feel the same *shrug* it’s just our way

“hmmm $20... should I order a Pizza, or save some lives?“

Hold on now, basically you’re assuming Americans don’t donate because they’re heartless bastards and pretty much every Canadian cares more for the less fortunate. I would like to see where you come up with your stats because it sounds like your attempting to dazzle people with bullshit in your country’s favor. I’m willing to bet the U.S. has donated far more to 3rd world countries in need than Canada could ever produce, total. Hell, I’d even go so far as to say per capita. Americans and American companies supply donations in large quantities that actually make an impact. However, there is a huge tax reduction in favor of the U.S. taxpayer if they choose to donate. Besides the point, I personally have donated over $2,000 USD over the past 3 years to the M.D.A. association. Yes, it’s important to me and I am aware only because it DOES affect me personally. My son has Myotonic Dystrophy which is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. Don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Jerry Lewis and the the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Labor Day Telethon but I’m am very grateful for the massive donations that come from Americans alone.

Anyhow, not every American is a cold heartless bastard as portrayed through the world of stereotypicalism (not sure if that’s a word but it is now). I mean hell, we’re all the same damn people with basically the same ethnic origins. There’s just a line that divides us into two countries. Can we help it if our government went on a rampage? F*ck no! At the time of election Bush seemed like a great candidate. Nobody was prepared for this and I guarantee you most Americans are against Bush’s policy. Awe fuck, I’m babbling on. For what it’s worth, other Country’s hatred for all Americans is just as degrading and ignorant as the American government’s actions itself.

On another note, I really could care less about Canada. I’m not saying I care less about the people in Canada on a personal level, just trivial facts about Canada holds no value to me, whatsoever, and probably most Americans.

america does donate alot but its also population wise as well because the usa has like 6x the population of canada dosnt mean canadian donations are worthless but america only wins because of that and reson why usa has alot of countrys hating them is because bush makes them look like it and alot of them are ignorant i had a american kid go to my school and he use to think canada is a 3rd world country and we all live in igloos straight but after he relise its not he started acting like he knew it all along and trying act like america the main power of the world and he can run back to usa saying someone tried to give him drugs and theyll blow canada off the map once they hear that he was so stupid and annoying and he didnt know whats the name of city he lived in back in america
im not saying there all bad but there are alot of igrnant ppl there but im not saying canadas so perfect ether because i did meet igronant canadians who think we can take over the worldstraight

oh well canada ftw smiley

Xtrm - no one believes that you need to know every single detail about this country. Not all Canadians even do. However, knowledge of the country’s leader, capital, etc. is hardly “trivial” knowledge.

A little knowledge about other areas of the world, other cultures, and other points of view is necessary. For example, if someone couldn’t locate Asia on the map, or thought it always snowed in Nigeria, I would think that their world-view was very narrow...and as such would think their capacity for understanding other cultures and other points of view would probably be just as narrow.

It’s an unfortunate effect of being a “superpower”. If you look back in history nearly every empire or “superpower” believed that their culture and their country was THE most important, and as such willingly remained ignorant of many essentials of other cultures. It doesn’t mean every single person in that country is ignorant. But it does mean that there is that underlying sense of other countries/cultures being insignificant.

And for the record - I don’t hate America, or Americans. I loathe the current politics, I loathe some people’s points of view (such as those who are racist), but I don’t hate the people.

Edit: hmmm I really should read before I post. James already pointed out something along these lines. But I’m not sure anyone else read it...

On the contrary, knowledge of Canada’s Prime Minister’s name for Americans is just about as useful as knowing the name of the Prime Minister for the Galapagos Islands. Which is funny because the Galapagos Islands are uninhabited by humans. People want to know who’s making the biggest noise/impact on our world and quite frankly Canada is very quiet (no offence intended). There’s just NOTHING interesting about it currently. It doesn’t even qualify for common sense it’s soo uninteresting. If you were to ask practically anybody on earth who Saddam is or what’s Iraq’s capitol, they could answer it before you even finish the question without hesitation. Make some noise and it shall be known, otherwise people’s “narrow world-views” (in your opinion) vs trivial knowledge about uninteresting locations just become a hobby for pointless reasons unless it affected you in some kind of way.
