IF MS released a handheld now, what would your take be on it? I think it would crash and burn UNLESS the specs actually kicked ass for a handheld (like Xbox 1 specs put into a handheld) but anything below that this late would be buried by the sales of PSP and DS.
MS would be smart to stay out of this, they should be content dominating the online world with consoles, let nintendo keep its Iron fist over the handheld market.
I wouldn’t buy it, nor would I recommend they go into the full-blown gaming market. Its pointless. Unless they could dish out killer games, as in, games that can interest you for a quick run, they would primarily be selling a multimedia item, of which they already have one.
First of all handheld market isn’t big enough for 3 hardwares. And Nintendo ain’t going anywhere and Sony has entered enough to at least stay, meaning already a bad move.
Secondly I really don’t see Nintenod losing that and as you’ve seen with the PSP, software don’t sell well. Meaning there’s only room for one software giant in it as well.

But, its Microsoft...
I don’t know how well the Zune is doing, but they could implement a more gaming oriented aspect to it.
Actually, look at Vista. Microsoft is trying to bring the Live experience to PC gaming, so they could actually attempt to bring it to handhelds. A full blown Live network: handheld, PC, or console. It wouldn’t be that bad of a move actually.
The only thing is, the handheld would have to have a good multimedia standing, but I think the Live Marketplace could be transferred, making something akin to iTunes.
Now that I think about it, it may not be too bad...

Zune did horrible its first year, but actualy lately its been doing quite well. Mostly in part that iPhone hasn’t done so hot.
But the handheld market is just not a great market to enter. I mean the PSP has been the only successful product, other than one that is NIntendo, to enter it and even then it’s getting quite badly beaten. And it’s entry could mostly be explained through simple brandname share of the PS2. So I’d say that it would not be a good move for MS as it’s almost an impossible market to squeeze into. Personally I think MS is content with using Rare right now to make DS games that have done quite well on the market.

MS is trying to make a Universal Online System. One that can connect people from their cell phone to their game console, to their computer.
It would be a good thing really. Because as far as I know, there is nothing else that can do that on a massive scale. (besides the Internet of course, but it’s overall disorganized and full of holes)

Nerevar- yea it’s nice but Live Anywhere has never really been a selling point nor something that makes the news haha. Although GG tried to hype it up as something big earlier, I told yall then that Live Anywhere wasn’t anything special nor something to turn anything around.
I doubt people would by an Xbox handheld simply for that. Not to mention I’d assume that would cost money as well unless you already have an account which isn’t good to that kind of consumer.

The Internet is what allows Microsoft to do what they do.
Like I said, they have a powerful standing with Live, and implementing connectivity on the handheld and mobile areas would not really be too bad. It could establish them as a powerful competitor for the overblown Apple market. Download songs, music, movies, or arcade games on your 360 or PC, then transfer what you want to the Zune or whatever handheld. Talk to your friends you have on your gamertag, add MS Points anywhere you want, and if its strong enough, play certain online games anywhere.
Not only that, its Microsoft, a well known name. Granted, Apple is beginning to regain some old attention, but all the more reason for Microsoft to come into their market and dominate.
The gaming portion, that’s a harder market to crack. But, if they have the Live Arcade on a handheld, they have the games that got Nintendo where they are in that market.
its like half way through the hand held generation. now, if they were to jump in at the next logical time...that would be an interesting question. it would depend what they did with it. as zucas said, nintendo has the handheld market in a death grip. but, i’d say sony did also with the ps2, and we all are seeing how that is working out for them. brand loyalty only goes so far. not to say that nintendo will be knocked off their pedestal any time soon though. i doubt nintendo would fall about like that, that fast. but, the fact remains, the handheld department generates some pretty big sales. you gotta wonder if it would have a chance. their biggest challenge would be distinguishing them selfs from sony. they can’t be labeled as just annother “not nintendo” handheld. that could just knock sony and ms out of that race. they would be hard pressed to make any headway, especially with little to no support from japan, but i think if they did it right, they could pull something decent off. but, i think it would do more damage to the psp then anything nintendo put out there.
so, i’d say it is probably to big or a risk. at least at this point.
