try this, it goes beyond what the system usually controls, so may work
if using XP, it dont always show that ZIP program in ADD/REMOVE (i hate VISTA so much i dont even wanna see that cock-up of a system, so i will assume they left at least 'this' much the same in it)............
Goto Control Panel, and open FOLDER OPTIONS (or open file explorer and click on TOOLS & FOLDER OPTIONS)
Click the tab named FILE TYPES.
Right down at the bottom of the list of file types, you will see ZIP.
Left click once to select ZIP.
See where it says OPENS WITH...and then says what opens it....there you may see something useless, or something like that stuffit nonsense....
Click on CHANGE......
A list of things that can be associated with ZIP files will appear - and at the top of that list, it 'should' say Compressed (zipped) Folders
Select that item, and make sure the box is ticked below there - named ALWAYS USE THE SELECTED PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS TYPE OF FILE.
Click OK, and go check a zip file.

If that fails, it can still be fixed, but in a slightly longer way. If the above dont work, say so on here, and i will go through the file-reassociation thing to be done.
