Affirmative Action is an economic theory/policy established during the Civil Rights Movement. It seeks to redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment. Simply put, it makes it so you can’t be denied an education, job, etc. based on your gender, race, or ethnicity.
The reason I’m making a thread about it is because it is controversial. It has been thought to cause reverse-discrimination (discrimination against whites). There was a court case where a white had a GPA of 3.8, but minorities were getting accepted into that college and they weren’t as achieved. They claimed that because of Affirmative Action, minorities were predominant. The Supreme Court later found the quota system unconstitutional because of this.
So do you think about Affirmative Action?

I think it helps...at the same time it hurts, I have a good gpabecause I study hard and it annoys me when people say if I get into a good school its only because I’m black
No it shouldn’t, but depending on where you’re from it does.
It’s really hard, how to you apply this kind of legislation to so many different areas that have very different race relations?
And it’s not just for past discrimination. On the contrary, women are still paid less then men for doing the same job (on average), and yet some people are crying bloody murder over the fact that men don’t have the same equal-rights opportunities (I’m coming from a Canadian background by the way, I’m not sure how the American system works).
I don’t think you can put in legislation that treats everyone equally...if everyone isn’t getting treated equally, you know? You have to work with the reality.
It’s really tricky, and certainly should continue to be reviewed and revised, but I don’t think it should be abolished. Racism, sexism and ageism in the work place is still pretty prevalent in many places. Ideally, I wish the money could be spent on trying to breakdown those racist barriers in terms of understanding and acceptance. But that’s crazy hard to do, I don’t even think it can be done probably.
It’s unconstitutional to begin with as it discriminates.
And secondly its stupid. It takes away jobs from people that are best fit for it jsut to satisfy the minority. I mean I thought we lived in a country of opportunity not free rides. Everyond has equal chance to do something in this country, at least in theory. But whoever succeeds the best should be able to get the perks. No free rides. Some people get it confused but its the equality of opportunity not outcome.
