If you find something to report, the first thing you’d do is try to find which mods are online. Usually this can be done by seeing which mod posted last and you can just PM he/her the problem. You would usually get a response. But I have noticed that when it gets late the Mods start to leave, and you can’t tell if you’re the only one online or not if there’s a problem.
Let’s say that somebody decides to have a spam attack on a thread that’s in another section and you need a mod. Because the status of the moderators are hidden, you can’t see where they are or even if they’re online at the moment. That way, you can’t tell if a mod’s online on another thread, and if it seems as if a mod’s not online on that specific thread the person that is spamming goes on ahead and spams and gets away with it. Many people say “Don’t worry, the problem will get taken care of”, but the main question is when?
I have no problem at the moment, this is just a heads up for the mods.
If you don’t know if a mods online, just click the report button and an online mod will take care of it. If we were shown as online, and none of us were on, someone could take advantage of that.
But if they don’t know, they’ll just remain stupid and spam anyways. Making it so that you can’t tell if the mods are online or not thins out the smarter spammers, but not spammers to the level of Rocman_Kenny.
You can report them, but they keep coming back anyways :/

So?
They’re going to come back anyways.
letting people know we’re online would do more bad than good.
I can assure every time I am online I make a note of the number of reports after I check it. If the number is changed, I will view the report within the minute.
I am assuming that my fellow staff have similar styles of moderating.

Same here. I view reports as soon as I sign in. Although I would like to remind people that the report system is to report problems (i.e. rule violations) - not to point out a post you think is funny, etc.

I agree with Squipple somewhat, I would like to know when some of the mods were on.
Yep I can definitely understand that point of view. Unfortunately, for this site, if it were shown when mods were on or not...spammers would take advantage of times when no mods were on.
