Last night while I was dreaming about Jessica Alba I had an epiphany,
I realized gameplay and graphics are like the ying and the yang
they both need each other from preventing the other’s disgrace
you see when you have great gameplay but not so great graphics then all the pressure is put on gameplay this causes it to lose it’s appeal faster than normal
and when you have amazing graphics but the same gameplay over and over again, then the pressure is put on graphics and then it don’t matter how pretty the graphics can get as it’s just the same thing repeating over and over again
so, let the graphic whores and gameplay bitches burn me to death...
Tetris on my gameboy (original) is still one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Same with Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. Graphics make a game look pretty but it’s not necessary to create a good game. Physics matter, but that’s in the game engine, not the graphical prowess of the game.
Needless to say I would love all my games to look like Crysis, but it’s not something that you have to have in order to create a solid, fun to play, video game.
Gameplay always has to be fantastic. Graphics always have to be fantastic. They are tied in together and must be good for the game to be good.
But there are a lot of misunderstandings about them, especially graphics. First and foremost gameplay has to be good for graphics to even matter. Just how it works. Not the other way around ever.
Secondly graphics have to fit the gameplay. Giving the Simpsons game realistic graphics is a failure haha. Thirdly graphics have to be fully polished to work.
The thing constued about graphics, is that it only means realism, which is in fact false. Graphics includes art style and creativity. Meaning it doesn’t have to be real to be good. Okami is easily one of the greatest graphical achievements in gaming history, and I give it more credit on design than I ever would Crysis.
Graphics can make up for gameplay, but it also has to be backed by other good production values (sound, physics, etc.). However, it is unlikely such a game would last for very long. Now, a game with an enthralling story can get people in, but only if they care for such things.
So, I trust a game with solid, well-built and thoughtful gameplay over a game which boasts graphics but an average gameplay mechanic.
Gameplay and Graphics I think need to balance out kinda like what zeta is saying. For instance The gameplay on Assasins creed pissed me off but the graphics were great but I still thought the game sucked in all. Though if the gameplay was fun it wouldn’t feel fun at all if the graphics were just moving boxes
