Now for the Japanese side of things. Second big week of holidays for them. Holiday sales in Japan usually last through the first couple of weeks of January so next week should be the biggest week of them all. But this week still pretty collosal. Check it:

NDS- 319,209(+32%) 21,162,670
Wii- 268,954(+58%) 4,501,760
PSP- 175,346(0%) 7,565,084
PS3- 55,119(-7%) 1,638,791
PS2- 22,732(+14%) 22,268,941

360- 8,580(-3%) 534,559
GBA- 305(+22%) 16,701,455
NGC- 74(+48%) 4,024,252

A few things to note. Nintendo DS is still the monster, but it is noticeable that sales are down from last year at the same time. Explanation? It’s possible that DS may be experiencing some times of diminishing returns. Over the last 2 yrs DS in Japan has sold at rates that are unprecedented in the country, selling what took PS2 6 years in half the time. Being only a country of 150 million, taking it by storm that fast would give a certain time in its life a point of diminishing returns. Now this isn’t something permaneant, it just means that DS has already reached the heighest point it probably could ever reach in one year, which doubled any record before that. DS will still be on top in the Japanese market, it just won’t be able to do what it did before due to that concept. But it’ll still lead easily, as it’s still owning PSP.

With that out of the way, Nintendomination continues, with DS and Wii taking 70% of all hardware sales. If you add PSP into the mix, then that’s 90% of all hardware sales. Meaning PS2, PS3, and 360, are just a smidgeon 10% of the entire market. Now here’s a few scary things. PS3 is the first scary thing. All were saying after the 2 weeks it outsold the Wii that things were changing. But it seems the exact opposite has happened. The 40gb release and pricedrop has offset the holiday season. What does that mean? It means that PS3 holidays have been completely ruined because of the 40gb and pricedrop. Or another explanation for that would be no mainstream appeal. I pick a little bit of 2. PS3 saw a decrease in sales this week, meaning it has apsolutely no mainstream appeal whatsoever, as holiday rises are caused by the mainstream buyers.

The second scarier thing is 360 sales. In the same timeframe its been out, its been completely sold out by the PS2. Not to mention it is drastically down in sales this holiday season than from last. It has apsolutely no mainstream appeal just like the PS3 right now, and it’s apparent that 360 is about dead. 2007 was the last year for the 360 in Japan, as Wii takes over, and PS3 cleans up whatever is rest. MS’s hopes of a better 2008, died this holiday season, as Lost Odyssey proved nothing.

And the scariest thing is that people are still buying the GBA and GC. Seriously people come on.

Oh forgot to mention DS and Wii software accounted for 82% of all software sold this week. I don’t think domination can be used anymore. DS and Wii in japan are annihilating the competition now.
