Actually, the whole silver bullet thing is not the only way to kill a werewolf by traditional lore, its merely the most glamorized one. Decapitation and burning will also kill a werewolf.
the story behind silver is the old dark ages theory that pure metals such as silver would purify the blood and by tradition, the lupine virus that is responsible for the change of genetic material to alter one into a werewolf would be cured by the purity of silver. Now the kill a werewolf with a silver bullet will only work if it would otherwise be a normal fatal wound for a human or animal, say a shot to the brain or heart.
Fire was seen as the primal enemy of animals as it is a dangerous thing in nature, ergo could kill a werewolf who was by very essence the primal side of our humanity.
Decapitation is self explanatory. no head = dead!
The whole changing at a full moon thing is also a misconception based on the strong association that wolves and many other animals have with the moon.
Some tales speak of the ability to turn into a wolf when wearing a wolf skin belt and drinking the liquefied fat of the animal itself, others speak of incantations and rituals.
There is also a strong belief that the change is a primal survival instinct that can occur when the host becomes enraged or scared or sexually active. It is thought that many werewolves borne of two werewolf parents would not change until they hit puberty or for females, their first menstruation cycle when the hormones are at their highest levels.
