the age old question that has bugged man since the dawn of time.
I have recently reached an epiphany on the subject but before I share my thoughts with you all, I would like to hear what you think or propose the meaning to be.
Of course there is no one 'correct' answer because it is at best a theory which has yet to be proven and stands not to be proven so long as individuality exists.
So...the meaning of life.
what is it? ---

Umm.. Well, to speak purely in a technical sense.. The meaning of life in general is to reproduce and keep the human race alive.
Less technically, it’s to simply live and enjoy.
To some the meaning of life is to serve. (Religious)

I will do it in parts to promote discussion.
Well what is the meaning of life?
Society places much emphasis on money and being successful of which are often pivotal to any single persons survival. Success = money. Money = happiness.
Yes, that right, money = happiness. ---

Smith:
Why? Mr. Anderson, Why? Why do you it? Why? Why get up? Why keep Fighting? I believe you are fighting for something more than your survival? Could you tell me what it IS? Do you EVEN KNOW? is it FREEDOM, or TRUE? perhaps PEACE, could it be LOVE; ILUSIONS Mr. Anderson, vague in our perceptions, temporary contrast of the fable human intellect trying to justify a existence that is without MEANING OR PURPOSE, and all of them artificial as the matrix itself, although only a human mind could have thing in something insipid as love; You must be able to see it Mr. Anderson, you must know by now you can see it that is pointless to keep fighting, WHY? MR. ANDERSON, WHY?
NEO: BECAUSE I CHOOSE TOO.
The meaning of life is to choose to exist, to choose to love, to choose our life and the way we live it, to choose to enjoy it or hate it.
Man sometimes you can find dip shit in the movies. ---

Yes, that right, money = happiness.
Now there might be those of you that dismiss that statement as false, but we need money to buy happiness.
Now this doesn’t just go for expensive luxuries such as a car or a house.
Simply because you can find people like the monks of Tibet who don’t buy anything and are happy receiving gifts to survive, however those gifts still cost someone money.
A house even if won in a lottery still cost money to build, even if not paid for by you.
People need money to be happy. You have no food, no house, no possessions..well you won’t be very happy, nor will you live very long.
People work hard and strive for success for money, to live better lives and live more comfortably. To be happier.
So does this mean that success is the meaning of life. To earn a nice wage, have nice things to live comfortably.
well no, not really.
There are those who choose to live a life of poverty or live a life of poverty due to circumstances out of their control and they still have meaning to their lives.
so that pretty much debunks that success and money are the meaning of life.
So whats next...Reproduction, to preserve the species....
is this the meaning of life? ---

You choose to believe that, i choose not too, so again the meaning of life is up to everyone choices. therefore is diferent in each one of us, and is our choice to find it. ---

UBER 1337 Poster Rep: 20 Joined: 26 Aug 2005 Posts: 4,728 OFFLINE | I can argue that money is not happiness. There is satiation, but happiness will not be achieved by money alone, for most of us.
Yeah, most need money to live, but that’s only because of society. That could change, but I wouldn’t bank on that ever changing.
Happiness, wealth, or whatever you wish to call it, is achieved through your dreams and what your heart tells you. Yeah, I’m getting all deep up in this bitch, so sue me.
We all have dreams, some more than others. When we are content with our achievements and stance in society and accept our faults, but do not ignore them to let them grow, then we can truly be happy.
There is no set in stone meaning of life, however. Not even reproduction and survival, as would be stated biologically, is the meaning of life. Its the process of life. It keeps life going, but it is not its meaning. But, common, bringing a scientific subject to a philosophical one, what are you? Scared?
I would say finding happiness is the meaning to life. Why? Because, happiness is what the ultimate goal of everyone is. Why do you do what you do? Simply, to be happy. Many people, unfortunately, don’t achieve happiness, and when I say happiness, I mean a life where you regret nothing and have fulfilled your dreams. Einstein, the Romans, ancient Greece, Martin Luther King Jr., you, your friends, corporate bastards, even Hitler all worked to be happy. Happiness is so broad, but its what we strive for. The meaning, as I see it, is to achieve a goal.
Religiously, I also believe its serving God, but, of course, not everyone believes in God. So, I won’t go there. ---

SAMO© Rep: 34 Joined: 10 Sep 2005 Posts: 15,712 OFFLINE | after reading rageoverdose’s thing, i think that there are three meanings of life. or, one meaning, in three parts. hard to say.
the first is obvious. the scientific an biological need to reproduce. it gives our life some ultimate meaning, knowing that our DNA WILL be passed on. that someone WILL remember us. that we have made an impact on earth, and that our DNA can continue to do this. this is the one universal purpose that everyone shares.
the second is happiness. everyone wants it, and it is what we all strive for. it is supposed to be the ultimate reward for anything. with it, nothing else really matters. people become so desperate for happiness that they fool themselfs into thinking you can achieve permanent satisfaction though simple methods, such as money. but, those are temporary, meaningless in the end. if money brought happiness, then we wouldn’t have so much suicide and depression in one of the richest countries in the world (USA). and, there are people living in poverty who are truly happier then us. who actually have it figured out. these people with nothing are literally better at life then those of us with everything. i think everyone’s happiness is achieved differently. this is of course the case. everyone is different, everyone likes to do different things. but, everyone has that need for happiness.
third, and this is going to be the one people disagree with, i think my religion, my God, gives me purpose in life. i think that the third meaning in life is whatever God assigns to you life. it is up to each individual person to figure out just what that is. whether or not they are religious, i think that they will always strive for their purpose in this. everyone wants to find that nitch that they were just made to fill. i know that a lot of people will disagree with me in this one, but that doesn’t really bother me. ---

This.
although, we all die. So, while we are here the meaning of our individual life should be to live our life in a way that leaves us fulfilled, and somehow at least attempts to redeem mankinds past folly’s.
That, and drink, fight, and fuck. ---

jaja just waking up Guest | the meaning of life can be answered by another question
is god real?
if so, then for most religions
the meaning of life is a test
to see whether you go to heaven or hell
if not, then life doesnt really have much of a meaning exept to ones own self
example
if one man wants to change the world
then lifes meaning to him would be changing the world
if another man just wants to enjoy life and have fun
then to him life would be trying to get the best out of everything and having fun along the way doing it...
so i dont think theres really a exact definition possible.
Of course these are just my opinions
and im very tired to be thinking on such things
so i hope this makes sense to everyone | | | 02 Jan 2008 07:17 pm |

People need money to be happy. You have no food, no house, no possessions..well you won’t be very happy, nor will you live very long.
Therefore due to lack of money = misery, money = happiness, even if indirectly.
People work hard and strive for success for money, to live better lives and live more comfortably. To be happier.
So does this mean that success is the meaning of life. To earn a nice wage, have nice things to live comfortably.
well no, not really.

so that pretty much debunks that success and money are the meaning of life.
So whats next...Reproduction, to preserve the species....
is this the meaning of life?
Reproduction and spreading our genetic material so that our genetic likeness may live on after we are gone is not so much a meaning, but a survival technique that is inherent in all of natures animals. If we reproduce in the same genetic circle we are born without seeking a mate from a different genetic background, the negative traits of our genes will be strengthened over time and wold ultimately lead to the destruction of our linage. By mixing our dna with that of another, we are strengthening the chances of survival through the creation of a new genetic being who has a strong chance of picking up good traits form either parent and avoiding the pitfalls inherent in their biological parents genetic structures. this would allow them to have a better chance of surviving and changes to the enviroment that might kill off their parents.
Now this isn’t so much true in modern times for humans since we have all but distanced ourselves form the harsh living conditions that animals in the wild face. Even so, many of us still possess that instinct to reproduce, even if that has been in large replaced by recreational sex.
SO..how come reproducing and having a child isn’t the meaning of live?
Well some individuals are born unable to bear children and others choose not to. This would insinuate that they have no meaning to their lives where as they clearly do and can go on to do many great meaningful things.
The key thing is that the 'meaning of life' is available and obtainable by everyone who is living, not just the select few who can reproduce or work hard and earn money.
So if not reproduction, nor success and money, what could the meaning of life be?
Perhaps religion, as hinted by members and churches alike is the meaning of life, our purpose for existence??
that we shall see. ---
