Honorable Mentions are Focus by Cynic, Unquestionable Prescence by Atheist, Legions by Deicide, and The Bleeding by Cannibal Corpse.

Overall though, I’d say that Blackwater Park - Opeth is by far the best out there. Don’t get me wrong; I love the intensity of balls-out brutal death metal, but it’s the dynamic shifts in this album that provide the contrast that makes this album so special. It’s that contrast that makes the heavy parts so wonderfully brutal.

DVDA hit the nail on the head actually. Blackwater Park and Still Life are both equally wonderful.

Cannibal Corpse-Tomb of the Mutilated
Cryptopsy-Blasphemy Made Flesh
Cryptopsy-None So Vile
Behemoth-Demigod
Decapitated-Nihility
Obituary-Slowly We Rot

It’s one of the few death metal albums I’ve ever heard where the bass drums don’t sound like total wank too, so that’s a plus.
It’s intense though, and a pretty consistent album.

I really liked the double bass that was in the album also. But the main reason I really liked the album was the blistering guitar work.

Morningrise is the true masterpiece though, however it’s less accessible. I fear their next release will suck though =/
