Only some shooters are hardcore. First of all most shooters don’t have long or deep storyline. Um Halo would be one of the exceptions, but most of that is shown through cutscenes and not necessarily gameplay. The thing that makes shooters a casual title is because the only gameplay mechanic is shooting, making it something easy to grasp by all.

Thus for a shooter to be a hardcore game it nees other elements from other genres, which is why Metroid Prime and Bioshock make it as hardcore games, as most of them just consider them either RPG’s or action adventures with a gun.

what about half-life 2?

I’ve never played Half Life series to really put it in any classification.

Books aren’t the game now are they haha.

There are some aspects of Halo that are hardcore, such as some of the online features that are more intricate in design, and some of the storyline progression could be considered more RPG like, but for the most part it is casual. Gameplay is what puts Halo as a casual game, as because it falls in the shooter genre and takes no tactical side to it.

I mean I think people are most surprised by the shooter genre, just because a lot of hardcore gamers play it. Probably started with Doom and then on the consoles Goldeneye 007. But by definition it is not a hardcore game. Heart of hardcore gaming is RPG’s, RTS’s, and Action Adventures. And if ya think about it, games early on were mostly something like this. Even in the NES and SNES age. If you noticed most of the older franchises that have survived are from those genres.

I figure a lot of the hardcore games are ones you’d really have to care about to get into.

I mean, if a game has a learning curve the size of Mt. Everest, it’s not going to get picked up by anyone that isn’t serious about playing it.

Anyway, Zucas should make one of these for hardcore GAMERS and casual gamers. He seems to know what he’s talking about there better than I do. wink

but of course. Zelda franchise like the Final Fantasy franchise is like the pinnacle definition of the hardcore gaming genre. That’s why they sell so beastly, cause all the hardcore gamers go out and buy them.

Well all of us here are hardcore gamers. That’s based on gaming habits. I mean you can buy the most casual game in the world, but if you play it for 5 hrs a day everyday, then man you are a hardcore gamer.
