personally i hate it all. why, cuz i find it boring and dont see whats so apealing about it.
by the way i respect ur opinions, even though i might not agree with em. and this is supposed to be discussion on why you like/hate anime. NOT A FLAMEWAR!!!
I like the diversity and expression of life aspects portrayed in anime.
It has something that western toons do not have...a sort of reality to them. They are not afraid to portray love, violence, emotions and the like, where as western cartoons are more reserved and most of the western ones that attempt this are of a poor quality and feel rushed.
All in all, Anime is much like watching a good quality Hollywood movie, but due to the special effects that would be required to make such a thing( kinda like transformers), its just not cost effective. Its a million dollar movie told through animation.

since that comment was so well written il elaborate on my reasons:
the reason i cant seem to enjoy anime is like you said, the reality to it, i try to keep cartoons seperate from reality. when im in the mood for reality i turn to the news for the stories it has to offer. the thing about cartoons is that they try to take your mind to a place that you have no experience of, whether it be a little farmhouse in the middle of nowhere or a beaver dam somewhere in the woods of canada. the characters are unrealistic, like something out of a story book, yet have this odd air to them that sort of makes you relate to them. in conclusion, i watch cartoons for fantasy and things that could never, ever happen, not reality.
Thats a fair reason.
That said though, there are still anime series and movies out there that are, as you prefer, detached form reality and have no real basis in any sort of human elements, just like western toons.
Howls moving castle, pom poko, slayers, excell saga are but a few of the more detached fantasy style anime.
Hmm.. It’s a good question to ask why people like anime. But an even better question would be, why do people hate it? You said that you dislike it because of that since of reality. Now I don’t know about Firewolf, but I can safely say that 90% of the anime available to your average watcher is anything but realistic. The most widely watched anime outside of Japan are things like.. Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Yugioh, Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell.. These anime are anything but realistic. The characters often have a since of realism to them, considering unlike American cartoons, Japanese Animation tends to use human characters who actually look like humans and set them in our world.. But Besides that.. Anime is about as unrealistic as any Western Cartoon.
I think it’s more of a social thing. In just about every area of the world, anime fans are looked down on and cast aside like they’re freaks. I think that fear of being called a geek or a nerd is what makes most people steer away from anime because it’s “not cool”. Those are just my ramblings anyway..
I like it because.. Well, I’m a bit of a kid at heart. I enjoy the cartoon feel over something involving real people. So instead of watching Hollywood movies or reading a book to get a intense story, I’ll grab an anime and watch. *shrugs* I guess when I watch cartoons, I don’t want to see the all funny no seriousness to it. It’s hard to find a western cartoon that doesn’t focus 100% on the comedy aspect or isn’t made for children.
i dont think i can enjoy anime, its too fucked up for me. oh and u reminded me, closest thing to anime ive ever watched was transformers, but transformers is transformers so wtvr.
one reason i like about anime is to get familiar with Japanese culture. I may live in Japan, but I am not Japanese at all. I am 100% Korean. But the main reason is it displays certain themes about life (betrayal, the quality to achieve ur goal, etc.). Anime is not always about the stuff u watch on TV (like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.) They can be something else like horror, drama, or romance (Higurashi, AIR, Kanon, Clannad).
watch the video in my sig. anime can get pretty freaking intense. thats a pro, of course, but thats never the real reason. my favorite anime is full metal alchemist. i like it a lot because everyones characters are SO realistic. there really aren’t any 'bad guys'. everyone has a really good reason to do doing what they are doing. some times, the main characters seem just as bad as anyone else. its just incredibly interesting to see the interactions in these shows.
it’s not about it getting intense but it not appealing to me at all if I want to see real stuff I watch CNN if I want to watch dramas or comedies I watch NBC’s or CBS' or ABC’s shows but anime really just doesn’t appeal to me specially cuz I don’t relate to the characters as many ppl would as I would with a character from a real-life show (I’m not talking about reality shows I hate those)

really? cuz, something me and my friends notice, when we get into an anime, there is almost always a character that we REALLY relate to.
