I know Otaku is Japanese for nerd and isn’t strictly used for those obsessed with anime, however that is the meaning thatit has taken outside of Japan.
Otaku in Japan is used to describe anyone with an unhealthy obsession with something, be it chess, comics, sport ect...and ergo is seen as a derogatory comment, however some Japanese and a majority of westerners have used the word as a callsign, and have reversed teh meaning in much the same way nigga is used by those of African or native Australian decent.
It hasn’t quite been reversed so much as it has been adopted as a term for such avid anime-fans, because the only real way to describe it is “obsessive”. Which is sad considering the majority of them consider things like Naruto, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Death Note, etc. as “good anime”.
I honestly think the term was originally attached for the reason of them being obsessive, but they had no idea what it meant so they just rolled with it until it was too late.
You could be right considering most of todays population and many a generation past spent most of their lives with their head stuck firmly up their ass with little idea on what was really going on.
Yeah. I mean I don’t really have anything against anime, just that 99% of all anime produced, and by rule that means 99% of all anime watched by “otakus” is just stock, ininspired, boring dribble with the same cheap animation shortcuts and stock expressions.
Not to say there’s not some good anime out there. You’d just be hard pressed to find any of it.
GAME: Watch your favorite animes and wait for a profile shot of a character whilst talking. If their mouth appears on their cheek, that’s a sure sign of a cheap anime, with that technique used to lower the cost of it since few basic human face rules are required, like the chin actually moving when one talks.
If you notice this same thing in a manga or anime-influenced webcomic, that’s a sure sign of just general laziness, considering the shortcut’s intended use has been negated by the lack of animation!
Actually, the 'lazy' facial animations are in place to help dubbers.
If they made the mouths form completely to the words being spoken, it’d make it extremely difficult for dubbers to make it look correct with English dialog due to the difference in language.
So it’s not as much 'cheap' as it is to ensure ease of translation.
If they made it super realistic, the dubbers would have to reanimate the mouths of all the characters just to match English dialog. It’d be too difficult.
I never said to match it perfectly. But placing the mouth where it is meant to be placed (under the nose, not on the cheek) would require extra animation. The chin, the lips would have to move, all while having whatever is beyond the mouth shift between in view and out. With the cheap way, all that is required is a still image and the animation of the mouth moving.
Besides, if your explanation were the case, why would some animes bother to have actually acurate mouth movements? ---
