Progressive keeps what can otherwise be cliched and tired genres and keeps them fresh, pushing the boundaries of music.
I mean, under progressive you’ve got bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree (kinda), Agalloch, Akercocke, Emperor’s later work, Meshuggah, every Technical Death Metal band ever; just so much amazing music.
I find Meshuggah to be more around the Thrash or Death section, and Technical Death Metal is mainly revolved around death metal, but I can see how it can be under progressive.
Anyway, my favorite is Death Metal. I like it mainly because of the technicality in it, and alot of the lyrical messages exposed in it (not the Cannibal Corpse styled lyrics) like war, isolation, aggression, political issues, etc.

Progressive metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music which blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Some progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music.
Meshuggah contains a surprising amount of jazz influence tbh. But yeah, Tech Death is very much progressive in nature.
Children of Bodom are not easily classified. Some consider them melodic death, some power, some progressive, some black, etc. I just put them under progressive because i had pretty much no clue where to put them.
