Members reputation system mis deeply flawed IMO, it’s basically a popularity contest.

That’s what any reputation system is. People give points they like, not to those who deserve it.

it’s supposed to give your reputation isn’t it? not a bunch of points next to your name.

either way as I stated it’s just IMO.

cid and nerevar...agreed that a lot of people resist change. But it’s for their and ours and mods and bjarnes own good.

anonymous....the thing is, the codec side of the other site can remain as is, guests can post etc. just here there’s no reason anymore, we’ve grown away from being attached to that part of the site. this is it’s own domain now. imo, we obviously still link and advertise between the two, still the same family of sites...but lounge can be vbulletin, no guest posting etc without affecting the other codec site.

and i think we should port as much of this current site to a new vbulletin site so that it keeps continuity at least, and new people will come the site and not think its a noob site. but has thousands of threads in it. we just grab all the threads that are worth keeping. as many as possible. it might be arduous but it’d be worth doing.

That’s the point.

A system could be implanted that make it to where you can only give a Rep every 24 hours.

I think if it’s possible that the old posts (that aren’t locked or excessively old) should be moved over to a new version if it was implemented. (start over, but keep some old things)

NEREVAR117 wrote: The older members don’t want change.

To put it bluntly, they need to deal with change.Sites that last this long... it’s simply routine to upgrade.

The site will almost always follow that of what the 'main' members believe and want. No one cares about the newer members.

Honestly, that’s just sad.

Yeah, tis been tested and true. It probably is time to move on to something different and explore more areas instead of slowly letting things “change” like the old members want (those who say “It will change eventually," when changes only occur with members, not something like this) but there are still the people who want to keep it like it is. In the long run it would probably benefit everyone once it was all sorted out; keeps Bjarne busy in his spare time but not so much that it has to preoccupy too much of his time, the members are happy with the changes (hopefully), the mods get more power, and so on. It’s that some are used to how it is, they’re all scared it will be a negative change.

Stix86 wrote: i can’t think of any real problems with the site. the speed has picked up and the mods are fine. for god sake they are doing there job out of concern for this site. they enjoy the site and want it to be enjojable for us. i’ve been on this site for over two years and the y mods have done a good job. they make mistakes but who doesn’t. the only real problem with this site is annoying members, but there here to stay.

For what it was, the site is really worsening in the long run, though many people don’t seem to see it how others do. Even though you mentioned it yourself as well, with the annoying members. Something like a new site and revamp of sections could help partition those types of people so everyone can hang out with the people they want to hang out with, the debaters with debaters and so on, while keeping an area for everyone.
But yeah, said that before.

Eh, we actually draw a lot of attention from guests via the lonely topic.

im on a site that uses rep and its nice because you build friendships with people that way, can make noobs feel welcome as well etc.

seriously, it’s not a popularity contest for many people. it has no effect on anyting. just a nice little thing that allows people to give each other a pat on the back. obviously some people will neg rep others, but ive never seen it to get hateful/nasty. if you promote community and friendship people TRY to be friendly and community orientated.

seriously, on this other site i go to, they really try hard to be friendly, equal, respect the wishes of others etc.

the lonely topic can be there for them to view, if they wanna post let them register.

because theyre lonely! they will register! they’ll wanna meet other lonely people and chat with them. hence not as lonely!

I see you point, but what I mean by it is...

lets say for example, someones in high school, theres this super intelligent kid with a social issue, and he tries to run for school president,

then theres some popular asshat who takes drugs to look cool and makes others life’s a misery, he runs, wins, and does nothing at all, and the other person never speaks up again.

That didn’t come out as well as I meant it, either way it may somehow sound proper.

Well, maybe that could be one of the threads that doesn’t require registration. Iunno, it’s just the way I feel it works, not having to register for that one, especially with how many guests do migrate there.
To have a few threads without the requirement of registration could be beneficial, get them more into the actual experience of being on the site, but only let them have the tip of it.

TR - I fully understand what you are saying. So there is an idea to solve the issue of people not wanting change.

Make MovieCodec 2.0 an addition to the site. Moviecodec is the main domain, while the Lounge is a branch from that.

As gg said, just make the Lounge into VBulletin.

Old moviecodec will still be here, but branching directly from it will be Moviecodec 2.0, to to speak.

Registering can take time, time that a lot of people may or may not have. A lot of those people post while at work or something. So maybe they don’t have the time to take an extra 5 minutes to register. If you’re going to disable guest posting, it should still be allowed in certain sections.

repping people options for 24 hr limits are there on vbulletin.

basically, everything and anything we as users, mods and admin could ever ask for implementing is offered by vbulletin.

it’s the industry standard forum format used worldwide.

it’s just the framework upon which everything runs, fully serviced by committed devs with regular upgrades etc.

you can design the site any which way you want it to look using vbulletin too. there are thousands out there that look different etc.

we could even run a design contest here, and there are probably mods/users here who know how to design sites around vbulletin as well.

Another thing about VBulletin, it’s highly customizable. i’ve seen some pretty amazing sites that were VBulletin, but looked completely different from the standard VBulletin setup.

What I’m saying is, Bjarne could make it look a lot like old Moviecodec, to keep the same feel.

im sorry im not here for the whole discussion since im working on the new PSP division, but i just wanna voice my opinions when i have time, but also i think the Sig of the Week comp should have a bit more emphasis so that we end up with more members like the other week instead of how it usualy is with just 2 or 3 entries...

cpo...rep isnt a big worry. its just a nice little feature that you can turn on or switch off with vbulletin. we dont have to have it from the get-go. but its there if we want it. in time, as we build a friendlier community, rep could then be used.

TR and Cid...lonely thread could be one of those unregistered threads for sure. that would work. cos all they do is post there, arent allowed to post elsewhere, and therefore coerced into registering and making friends, posting in the rest of the site. as long as they can view only. tease them.
