continuation of this thread. also discussed to some extent here

collected suggestions and ideas:
- www.moviecodec.com guest-allowed; lounge.moviecodec.com registered-users only
- lounge: registered users only, except specific boards (maybe a guest board?)
- lounge: threadstarter sets thread as “only registered users can reply” or “guests may reply” - kind of like livejournal? Then you have to decide can guests start threads? Obviously in www, guests have to be able to start threads to ask a question.

More ideas/suggestions?

Limiting the guests on this site is not wise.

ya it would be nice if there was some way to make it so that guests could post, but couldnt make topics... although it does get annoying when you are in a good discussion with some members, and a random guests come in randomly and just say...

“hi"

this is one of three forums i bother with.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/

at the bottom, 400,000 threads, 9 million posts, 50,000 members. no guest posting!

this is the other forum i go to.

http://www.raiderfans.net/forum/

at the bottom, 115,000 threads, 2.5 million posts, 20,000 members. most online 1,700. no guest posting. they even have a paid special premium section for special content which is doing big business.

compare to lounge.moviecodec which has a very promising video game and lifestyle potential to it.

i dunno the stats but it’s far less than either of those two, far more vandalized, flamed, spammed, hacked etc. it also allows guest posting!

ya i think that when guests cant post, it gives them a reason to make an account and stay some times... so i think its a pretty good idea... but then there would have to be more mods if the members increased that much...

No offense gg. But that logic won’t work. As there are many sites that have failed for this sole reason.

Restricting the guests completely will kill off the site, you can take my word for it.

Giving them some disabilities, but giving them the freedom of posting may work.

should also add...those other two sites, due to vbulletin, have far more moderating controls, powers, social order, and never any trouble. once someone tried to vandalize bigfooty but they couldn’t breach it.

in both forums theres a strong sense of community, there’s smack talk etc, but most people really become friends, meet, marry, go to pubs for a drink etc.

in lounge.moviecodec...theres the potential for all that, but there’s always too many problems that prevent it. too much hate and vandalism etc. guest posting, mods feeling powerless, people allowed to run rampant etc.

it’s debatable...meaning we should discuss it. but imo i disagree that guest posting is a lifeblood for a forum.

in fact, it’s THE number one thing that hurts this site.

imo let guests view and read all they like, they WILL register, trust me!

ya Nervin, enough people come to the site already that it wouldnt hurt the site too much if at all, the only real reason it ruins sites is more or less because people dont get led to the site as much, unlike with codec, where google leads here alot, and the other reason they fail is because they are old news, there are tons of sites that are better that take care of the same things... but codec isnt really like that... codec would be fine with no guests... maybe even better... the only problem is when users are too lazy to sign on so they post as guests... but screw them wink

How about decreasing Member post times to 10 seconds, rather then 20. And increasing guest post limits to 1 min 30 sec, or maybe even 2 min.

Not only that, but guests can no longer make topics.

This idea could work fairly well. Guests can post, and once they find out that becoming a member will grant them more options and give them more freedom. They will sign-up instantly.

look, anonymous can confirm this...

back in 2004/2005, when i first found this site, looking up info on the ps3, x360, revolution. i found this site, i found i was able to guest post, and there were hardly any rules, in fact none.

i went nuts, i immediately felt like moviecodec was somewhere i could prank. i’d post as thousands of guest names, just to disrupt people’s chats, pretend to be them, calling myself gay, etc etc. anonymous knows i used to be a bad troll here.

eventually i registered because i liked a few people like xtrm and zucas etc.

but before then, i was a terror. and EVERYONE who’s been a guest in the past or even recent has terrorized this site because you just go crazy in the head, whoa cool, you can get away with anything. call people bitch, whore, fag, cunt, etc. spam, post porn, create 100 threads just to irritate everyone.

trust me, ive been there and done that and i know everyone has done shit like this. because the lax rules here and guest posting MAKES YOU want to treat the site poorly.

you make it registered only, vbulletin, harder rules, work towards friendly community, involve people thru creating themes and contributing blogs and reviews, and trust me, people will look respectfully towards mvc.

i agree with the first half, but i still believe that gg is right when it comes to the guests... not giving them the ability to post would get more regisrations than just upping the privliges a bit...

I can understand that, but this is about THIS Moviecodec, not VBulletin.

We shouldn’t cut off the guests. Perhaps limiting them, so we still keep them. But they will then sign-up and we gain members.

THIS mvc is not attached to the original moviecodec which DID want guest posters.

here there’s no reason for it. except maybe lonely thread and ps3 vs 360 vs wii. but thats about it. they dont need anymore.

no ability to start threads. or post anywhere. must register.

you clean up 90% of problems right there.

original moviecodec.com can continue operating as a guest posting site. linking to here. they come here, they have to register imo. and a link from here to moviecodec.com, where they dont have to register.

simple easy.

OIC, Forgive me. I was misreading your posts.

Yes, I can agree to terms such as those.

this site is on its knees.
imo try no guest posting bar those two threads, must register otherwise, but can view.

try that for a few months and see.

nothing to lose. but the way it’s all going now, site is going downhill fast.

hence why also the mvc meeting towards vbulletin and all those other ideas as well.

but in its current form....try that suggestion i said. push bjarne into accepting. dont take no for answer. it’s just here in lounge that it will be like that.

in my experience/opinion...guests are the problem not the thing thats helping it.

i mean you all created a bunch of threads about all this yourselves before i even started my mvc meeting stuff.
