Bjarne, I think that’s kinda pointless. How about only allowing the member to give one rep to a single person once every 24 hours?
For example, I just gave Green_Ninja a positive rep. I shouldn’t be able to give her another one for 24 hours. However, I can still give a point to Zeta today.
Something like that.

I have a silly rank Rep: 41 Joined: 03 Nov 2003 Posts: 1,276 | I can implement that (allow you to give a person multiple reps but only within a certain timespan). As Cid is talking about.
What does everyone think?
And how do you think it should be represented?
Ie. for one thing I’m planning on adding it beside posts, ie. just below “Posts:"
And using graphics for it? Who could make graphics?
This is how it works now:
The number it shows is just the number of reputations given in total.
The color indicates if the majority if the votes were either negative (red), a balance between negative/positive votes black and positive (green).
A user can only vote if he has made 1000 posts himself.
Shortly I will find a way to show, at least the latest comments, on the user page.

Hmm... I could make some graphics if you could give me an example of what you’d want, how big, ect.
As for how it’s displayed...
Directly under a person’s avatar would probably be the best. Have the graphic representing the number of votes that person has received. Maybe taking the bar idea, have 10 notches on the bar. every notch on said bar represents 10 rep points. If the majority of rep given is negative the bar’s color will be red. If the majority is positive green. I don’t think neutral should be in it. Because when you rep somebody it should be a plus or a negative.
Then to be more specific, under the post colum you can also have the number.
Rep: 23
Something like that.
And how it should work, is like this.
Cid has 12 rep.
Bjarne gives Cid one positive rep.
Cid now has 13.
Zeta gives Cid a negative rep, Cid now has 12 rep.
Yah. How’s that sound?

And regarding the neutral rep., well, whether or not it’s possible to vote neutral, the amount of positive and negative votes can still balance (be equal). Honestly though I like the idea of a neutral vote/comment.
I will consider it. Regarding graphics I’m kind of at a loss... It should be very small obviously, liek the size of smilies...

Eh, I’m not too sure if I could think of anything about the size of a smiley except for a ball with a number in it or something. What about this?
It’d be 100 pixels wide to fit directly under a person’s avatar and 15 pixels tall.
It’s the bar I use on the member’s rep page in off topic. When it comes to rep, bars that slowly fill up are usually the best way to go.

What if you had more than one rep? Like this.
positive %
negative %
neutral %
Wouldn’t that help some?

Well, three bars would be a little much. The idea of the bar changing color depending on which rep was given the most is better.

See the Sputnikmusic forums for an exemplarary rep system. Bars beneath avatars, rep button at the bottom of post. When you click the rep button, you can choose either positive or negative rep, and send a message too.
The amount of rep you give out relates to the length of time you’ve been on the site and how much rep you have. The bars aren’t one for one - I believe it’s one for 5 points, 2 for 10, 3 for 50, 4 for 100, up to 10 for 1000. Red bars for negative rep, green for positive.
On your control panel/user account, there is a list of the last 6 or so users who repped you, a link to the post you were repped for, and the message they left.
Something like that would be far more in line with what the most successful forums use.

Over the next week or two the plan is do tweaking on the reputation system (in fact you might experience a reset if some changes are done that “invalidates” votes already cast....). I have numerous tweaks in mind (many based on the feedback users have provided thus far).
Also I will porbably implement the smileys given by Cid soonish
Lastly I have another relatively difficult thing that I really need to implement..A feature that should speed up the site immensely....Page caching (primarily for guests — - but guests = 70%+ of the traffic)

All right then. The rep thing is great.

I have a silly rank Rep: 41 Joined: 03 Nov 2003 Posts: 1,276 | Ok now I got a little time to say what I think about these suggestions.
On the idea of allowing one vote to be given each 24 hours. (Ie. you can vote for member x once every 24 hours). I don’t love this idea really much. I mean w´people would just vote and vote and vote. And who ever has the “most online” friends will get most votes. I do not really think that it would be representative....
One Cid’s notion of having the rep. bar, well it’s nice enough (and would look ok). The difficult part is figuring out what exactly it should be based on. Ie. what would it take to get it filled up? You know as the site grows and number of reps grows, it does not make any sense to have a fixed maximum.
Provide feedback...

How could I be happy? Rep: 58 Joined: 22 Aug 2006 Posts: 31,631 ONLINE | Hmmm, I see your point. You’re stating that the voting every 24 hour method wouldn’t work as it would become a popularity contest of sort, yes?
But... isn’t that the point? Or am I missing something...
