I have been hooked on the sweet melodies of Within Temptation for quite some time but having looked for other artist of the genre, I have discovered my taste runs deep for the style of music.

Bands I am smitten with at the moment are Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Dream Theatre, Coheed and Cambria, Epica and After Forever.

Anyone else like the same sort of style?

Dream Theater is fucking great, their drummer, Mike Portnoy, is one of the best drummers out there today. I used to listen to Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and Epica back before I got into extreme metal.

Well, if you’re looking for pagan metal with a very prominent orchestral influence then Hellveto might be up your alley. So far I’ve only listened to Stos, which is brilliant. I’ve heard good things about their (well, his, since it’s a one-man band) recent output as well.
There are some samples up on myspace:

Judging from your initial post, though, it seems that you might want to delve into the power metal genre. A few worthwhile bands to check out, off the top of my head:
Blind Guardian
Anubis Gate (power/prog)
Savatage (check out Hall of the Mountain King)
Omen (US) - first three albums are great
Liege Lord

That’s not really much to start on, so here’s a few recommendation threads on Metal-Archives (not all of them are specifically about power metal, but some good bands are mentioned):

Whenever I head Finntroll I for some reason think of Apocalyptica or whatever it is, a cello band.

I do not know why.

Hey Firewolf, if you’re really wanting to find more bands like these, I suggest make a thread similar to this one in the Metal Discussion section on http://metal-archives.com. Theres tons of metal experts on that site that can tell you just about anything you’re looking for.

I’d recommend using the search function first, since there are already a slew of recommendation threads that pop up every day.
