I hereby propose a trans-continental jam session.
This may have been spawned by my recent dicking around with recording, but I like to think I’m doing something for the community =D
Yes I know someone else already came up with the idea.
We were going to cover Death or someshit, but none of us were talented enough nor motivated enough to learn it, so now I want some ideas!
So what’s the plan?
Anyone who can play an instrument relatively cleanly, with basic means to record, is welcome to enter suggestions here. Do we pick a song we all like? Or do we send back and forth ideas until we come up with something resembling music?
Please note: Anyone who wants to play MUST be able to play to a click track. If you don’t know what that is, I suggest you leave your instrument in the cupboard and brush up some basic theory.
If you’re collaborating with someone else, for God’s sake,
Pick a tempo and stick to it. No good having the drummer at 140 bpm and everything else at 80.
So how do we send tracks?
If this is going to get off the ground, I suggest everyone creates their own
Soundclick Band Profile, such as mine
here. It allows you to host your music and gives us a place to collaborate.
If that’s not your thing, PM me for my MSN (no AIM; it’s shit) and we’ll work from there. All tracks in 320 Kbps MP3 or WAV format please.
I’m interested, how do I record?
This is a complicated thing. At the very, very basic level, you can use any mic you like, and I highly suggest recording to
Audacity, since it’s free and idiot-proof. You’ll need the
LAME MP3 Encoder to export files, however.
Microphone wise, if you’re going to take this remotely seriously, I recommend buying the proper mics, and spending a good amount of time getting to grips with them. I’ve spent two months fiddling with the settings on mine, and I technically need 13 for a studio quality recording. The sky really is the limit, price wise. However, here’s a rough idea for you guys;
Drums - Doubt anyone here is playing them, but I suggest, at the bare minimum, a condensor mic used as an overhead. Don’t get me started on mic’ing drums.
Bass and Guitar - It’s technically possible to plug your leads straight into the PC, but it’ll sound like wank, so I suggest a Dynamic mic, such as the
Shure SM57. Using an XLR to 3.5mm plug, insert it directly into your PC, and go from there. Use the mic to “close mic” the amp.
Vocals and Acoustic Guitar - You want a condensor, and the most idiot-proof is even in USB; The
Samson CO1U.
I’m interested and already have a basic means to record.
Good, completely disregard everything I’ve just said.
So who’s going to collaborate it all?
For the moment: Me. I’m experienced with various mixing/editing softwares, and this is partially an experiment dreamt up by me on a boring summer evening. However, this is an open project, and anyone can have a hand at anything, should they wish.
The whole idea is to get some projects and collaborations off the ground - or at the very least, some discussion.
Frankly, I’m not convinced this will go anywhere (PROVE ME WRONG /mu/... I mean... Music), but it might just get the music forum back to some small glimpse of what it was. Sure as hell beats all the 'Rap vs Hiphop' faggotry.
