In my opinion this guy is just a loser. All he does is murder people to show that murder is wrong. In fact, a lot of the people he kills aren’t even criminals (and some of the ones that are aren’t murderers), they’re just people doing their job and trying to find out who he is. If it wasn’t bad enough, his ultimate dream is to create a totalitarian world where anyone who does anything wrong is killed and he is the supreme god. What a jerk.

L and Light are intelligent so people may admire them for that. Plus the way the show is constructed u may begin to like light after a while because u want him to win against L and Near.
I like L more though....we share a high level of intelligence as well as love of sweets.
Light is essentially a genius. It’s simply because of the fact that it’s an anime that he has shortcomings. The author did that so that people wouldn’t be too upset by Light’s death.

No, he had shortcomings because otherwise the series would suck and he’d be a dull character. His shortcomings were mainly his cockiness and his self-assurance of genius.
And people like Light for a few reasons:
A ) Fangirls...
B ) People can identify with him. I know, for a fact, a lot of people wish they could kill others they find a poison to the world. Light only had the means to do it secretly.
C ) He’s actually a very deep character and a protagonist that almost seems like a villain. Hell, he pretty much is the villain. Usually the protagonist is a hero or antihero, not a villain. Yet, at the same time, he could be the antihero. He did work on getting the world to his standards of “purity." Can you easily say he’s wrong, without trying to appease the opinions of those around you?
So yeah, Light is a character that not only can appease the fangirls of the world, but he actually has something to him, unlike most pop characters. Usually people bitch about characters like Goku or Naruto, both shitty and overplayed characters, not characters who actually mix it up a bit and have a good amount of depth.
