in egypt he was but then he was forgotten. the only real exodia set i seen was the one yugi had. the rare hunters were counterfeits. unique doesnt=power
not exactly yugi defeats atem with his cards that are not so unique. exodia was never on the field to win since he had to stop the summoning of exodia while the gods r on the field doing battle. like i said exodia has only been played twice in all of duel monsters history. by yugi and then rare hunter. in egypt exodia was a god.

the reason why u cant make counterfeits of the gods was bcause peg created them with their power in one card which had the spirits of them and only people who had understanding of the ancient scriptures can use them.
exodia doesnt have all that power in one card bcause he is divided into five so its like producing separate monster cards which make up exodia and possibly because noone disturbed exodia so it doesnt have the actual spirit of him
