You can pick a record based on what you like now, or what you would have picked that year assuming you were old enough to care. I had lots of indie picks but I stuck to the bilboard albums so people would recognize them.

1986 Slim Pickins this year but I went with RUN-DMC mostly for the song Walk This Way
1987 Document R.E.M.
1988 - Appetite for Destruction — Guns n' Roses
1989 Cosmic Thing B-52s
1990 - World Clique Deee-Lite
1991 Gish - Smashing Pumpkins
1992 - Automatic For The People - R.E.M. - amazing album
1993 Siamese Dream Smashing Pumpkins
1994 Dookie Green Day
1995 - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness Smashing Pumpkins with (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? Oasis as a close second
1996 - The Score - The Fugees
1997 - Time Out Of Mind Bob Dylan
1998 Adore Smashing Pumpkins
1999 Really, really bad year. The best thing that came out was the Santana album or Rage Against the Machine. Lots of crap came out that year: Britney Spears, Eminem, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock
2000 Kid A - Radiohead

2002 - Songs for the Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age
2003 - Mary Star of the Sea Zwan and Give Up - The Postal Service
