Below that there should be some way of displaying other accounts that have used the IP address. Allowing a moderator to find if a certain bad member has other accounts they are hiding in.
Discuss. ---

The Magnificent Bastard Rep: 68 Joined: 28 Dec 2006 Posts: 19,541 | It would be helpful, but a good moderator or one who has a considerable amount of spare time can use some detective skills and research it themselves if the perpertrator is in need of further repromand.
I am not entirely sure on how the coding side of things wold work and as Bjarne has as a warning message on the ban screen, 'Remember that a persons IP address may change at any time (due to using dial-up internet or proxies), also remember that two different people may actually use the same IP address sometimes (same proxies/network). So be carefull when trying to determine exact patterns.'
So, I am doubtful that he would impliment this feature just due to the possibility of human error. ---

Indeed there are, however a on the ball mod will be able to tell other members even thorugh multiple acconts by familiarising themselves with the structure, posting style, time frames, language and syntax of the annoying and disruptive members.
Its much more accurate and helps you pin point which Ip’s to investigate if further action is needed. ---

It is, and I mentioned as such in my first post. I am not downplaying the usefullness of such a feature as it would save a certain amount of time, however it might been seen as a tool of lazyness. ---

Addict (beyond 1337) Rep: 69 Joined: 22 Aug 2006 Posts: 32,780 OFFLINE | Good points, FW. But I’m sure if a moderator, as you say, can play detective, they can also call a logical judgment on this new situation. Such as two members sharing the same IP and one breaks the rules. A mod may ban both without thinking. I understand. But this suggestion isn’t there to help make a mod ban-happy. just to possibly allow them to find a bad members other accounts faster. Rather then tediously searching.
I’m not necessarily asking Bjarne to implant such a feature. I’m wanting to see what the mods think, first of all. Before I even ask the big guy in charge. And it’s not like it’s a bad idea. If a moderator feels it’s unneeded, then they have the full option not to sue it and use their moderator instincts.
Edit - I just now realized I merely stated what you already stated. >_> Last edited 05 Sep 2008 11:18 am by NEREVAR117 | |

I do like it. It would make things speedier and save legwork. But not everyone will use it correctly I think.
Good judgement isn’t always a given unfortunatly..as some of the mods of this forum have oh so painfully shown us....
But I do like it. I do and I support such a idea. ---

I also think it’s a good idea, so long as mods realize it’s to be used as a guide.
I know what you mean about the “detective work” as I’ve had to engage in that on numerous occasions. And having a quick search for an IP match would make that considerably easier. Or at least for the times when you’re not quite sure who it is and have to do a little more hunting around. But I don’t know if it would be easy to implement or not...
ligytt - We can already see IP addresses. It’s simply a matter of comparison. ---

All I really know of are proxies.
There are multiple IP’s connected to your computer. The ISP, your router, your PC’s own IP...I forget which one the mods can see. ---

Yes, you CAN IP ban a proxy.
As for the IP search, definitely yes. Every forum system I’ve ever used had this feature. It’s a useful tool, and isn’t a violation of privacy because the moderators already can see the IP addresses of members. IP addresses aren’t private information anyway. ---

They should be.
Maybe not from admins of a site, but to common users, yes. ---
