Takes a simple google search. Or a proxy.
That’s why the other ongoing suggestion about blocking open proxies' access to the forum. Won’t completely get rid of the problem, but would minimize it. ---

I dunno why I mentioned this.
Its not really the issue since its all about account banning. xD ---

No I think it’s a valid point because it’s about IP matching, and you were pointing out possible problems with that . ---

Well if you can do an IP search right there, then the user probably doesn’t have time to switch IP’s.
Of course, you can just change your IP manually.
The only way to get around that is to block the ISP...But that would result in some shit. ---

Using different browsers, such as Firefox, IE, Avant, MSN, etc, and using proxies as well. I’ve seen this done. I’ve even tested it out myself. ---

The forum probably has access to the router external address of the user, so unless you’re using a proxy, I doubt you can get by it with multiple browsers. ---

Other than that, one thing I’ve seen, people denying that they’ve been caught, when the evidence has already been proven in front of their faces. About a month ago, me and some other spotted one member posing as another member in the Versus section just to make it seem as if there’s someone on his side, when it’s just himself under an alt account, and after a moderator has proven that he’s been using alt, he’s denied it again and again.
Other than that, banning proxies would put the problem at a minimum, as Etain has said. ---

Yeah, since most don’t know how to manually change their own IP address.
Or just use a dynamic IP.
BTW: I do think this is a good idea, I’m just bored and want to play devil’s advocate. ---

It’s kind of amusing if you ask me, posing under alt accounts, depending on the situation, but I digress. The idea is great. ---

Yes, you CAN IP ban a proxy.
As for the IP search, definitely yes. Every forum system I’ve ever used had this feature. It’s a useful tool, and isn’t a violation of privacy because the moderators already can see the IP addresses of members. IP addresses aren’t private information anyway.
They should be.
Maybe not from admins of a site, but to common users, yes.
I think it’s actually a matter of public record.
Regardless, it doesn’t reveal any personal information. It just says your internet provider. From my IP address (71.56.88.88 by the way), you could tell I get my internet from Comcast, but not a whole lot more. A lot of people think the street address listed with the IP address is where the connection comes from, but it isn’t. In my case, it’s a Comcast building. ---

I just pinged that address... xD
I dunno why...
But yeah, your Internet provider generally gives you an IP. Of course, since you are connected to it, it can trace back to you as well. That requires a more complex process though. And no one here can do it, so no worries. ---

Well you can always trace it further.
A simple whois lookup doesn’t yield all that information though.
Also, regarding the IP search thing, phpBB saves the IP address each post is made from. The IP address of each post is in the corner of the frame the post is in, and is only visible to those given permission by the root admin. ---

What kind of site? Is it going to have a forum? If it does, will the forum be the main feature of the site? ---

Wait, so is it going to be a free thing like ipbfree? Or do you have hosting?
If you DON’T have hosting, get your forum set up on Jcink. Gunblaza says they’re quite good. ---
