The Church vs me?

Well I was having a conversation with my friend about god and all that. He believes in god and such and I don’t. He asked me, “Why don’t you believe in god” well I didn’t exactly know how to put “There is no evidence for him” without sounding borderline asshole. So I asked, “Before I say anything, Do you believe in pretty punk flying unicorns?" And of course he said no. I asked “Why?" and he basically said “Because it’s just a fantasy made up by little girls." Then I clarified by saying “So it’s because of the fact there is no evidence correct?" He said yeah.

So he mentioned that he told this Shawn fellow, at his church(My old church actually), that I was an atheist. Now apperently this guy is a really big Christian. So I asked him, “Ok, so then what happened?" He said this guy wanted to have a talk with me and he said my friend should bring me to church so he could do just that.

Well I have no problems doing that, but I figure a few things COULD happen and more than likely will happen:
1. The guy is going to bring this up in front of the church going people and basically invite me up on stage for this little talk. Now while I feel confident that I could utterly destroy them in a debate, I don’t know if I can deal with random people standing up and saying ignorant shit.
OR
2. Another possibility is it’s just going to get around fairly fast and everyone will either a. Be pissed b. Be that “I feel sorry” for you type behavior. I have known these people my whole life pretty much but I never knew how they would react to a concious, diliberate, former christian non believer.

So what should I do guys? Should I take the chance, step up to the plate and try and have a debate with them, or should I just not bother?

The idea of debating them sounds fun. It really does, but considering these people know my parents, other home consequences could POSSIBLY insue. Mostly just yelling probably, but I think I would get defended by my brother in all honesty. At least I hope so.

I’d honestly say to go. I don’t think there’s much chance of them really forcing you into an argument, if they do put you up on the stage, so you likely could avoid getting into an argument. As for the yelling of the parents, I’m pretty sure it’s spread around the church pretty well by now, so if any yelling is going to occur I doubt you going wil change it

What about this Shawn guy who wants to have a word with me about it? There is also the possibility of him and a couple guys talking to me downstairs about it. So ehh...My friend is inconsistant. I will tell him to tell the guy it will be by my terms and my terms only. Not in front of the church. Just a small group or a mano mano conversation

I’m not a militant type personality. I’m not an asshole. I’m basically just going to debate civily and use all the facts I possibly can. I will tell him/them what I think and why I believe or disbelieve in certian things. I guess I’m just going to be giving my atheist testomony+Debate. If it goes that far.

Yeah, I probably will, but like I said, I’m making sure it happens in a place of my terms. I would rather it not be during church service or anything.

No, I mean the first part. The whole Adam and Eve thing. I may be Christian, but how would someone even know of that? The only way that they would is that they would have had to have been there in the first place.

One of the main reasons why I don’t trust the bible as a valid source of facts. I mean a “cunning beast of the fields”(a snake, not said to be satan at all) TALKED to them. I know if a snake talked to me...I would just go take medication or something.
