Atheism can’t be a religion. It is fundamentally impossible, in the same way that theism is not a religion.
Most people confuse those terms with religion. Religion is more of an obligation in life that is governed by a doctrine and belief system. Theism and atheism have no inherent doctrines, just mindsets; one believes that deities higher than humans exists (theism) and other does not believe (atheism).
There can be atheistic religions and theists that aren’t religious. However, atheism cannot be a religion, unless the English definition of the term is added onto.
