Hey,
I have recently created a whole load of demo files from Counter strike source. Unfortunatly for me, they are all .dem files. How can i play them! I have tried through the console on the game, it says ''file probably missing from source''. And i have tried the Sk player. And it says ''could not copy Demo- File. The system cannot find the path specified.''

I have no idea what i am doing wrong, can anyone point me in the direction of a .dem player so i can at least see what i have recorded.

you can watch the files in css by using the console.

play demoname.dem

im looking into how to convert them to .mpeg or .avi

its the command Playdemo filename.dem

(I made sure the .dem file was in the Counterstrike derectory - the one with the gameinfo.txt in it, and I didnt have to specift a path)

I would reccomend a program called FRAPS, which is a possible answer to convert your ingame footage to an AVI file or something like that... Mind you, a dem file is regarded as 'safe', and untampered with, whereas an AVI or other file format could have been edited...

Cody K, you can use the console command
“playdemo Spectre_demo.dem”
where 'Spectre_demo.dem' is the name of the demo, or you could settle with FRAPS, but FRAPS kills hard-drive space and it lags, but otherwise, you’re going to have to live without watching yourself killing people.

N.B. to all - Post if you hear of a 'SK|Source Player' or something.

I have searched all over the net and there used to be a very easy way to watch dem files when WON still exsisted. But ever since Steam it is all screwed up. Then I used GeekPlayer but now they are offline and GeekPlayer doesn’t work since Steam as well. Playing any and all dem files through the console as it was originally intended to be viewed no longer works. I have tried over 10 different demo’s and none will play. The lastest one gave this error:

Critical error:
R_TextureAnimation: infinite cycle

Other demo’s just simply crash the game...

Typing the typical commands in console doesn’t work. I have tried typing play demo.dem and it doesn’t work. I have tried typing playdemo demo.dem and that doesn’t work.

I have run across a script someone wrote up to make recording easier (1 bound button recording) but still no easier way to view dem files. I have been searching now off and on for a year now. If anyone knows anything, email me. Thanks.

My clan just had a scrim where a few of us suspect a new recruit of the other clan to be hacking. The recording I made (both in scrim and from HLTV the 2nd round) have not been able to play from the console sad

OK well just to explain how to use fraps because some ppl make it seem like they are actually using fraps while playing! ... no. what u need to do is record your demo and then after u are finished play the demo and press your video capture key on fraps. fraps will then record everything and turn it into an avi or whatever that u can watch with windows media player.

also if u want to edit it even further like u know add music and special effects use sony vegas

Still can’t play a .dem file. But i do have Fraps now. Although ina quick paced game like Css, its no good. If you allow fraps to record at 30fps, then you will also play the game at 30fps. So your cross hairs never shut and the game sucks and it is so hard to kill anyone you can never record any decent kills.

What i would like is a .dem player- (If anyone has any ideas- And dont say the Console, becasue ive tried so many times and it doesnt work)

Then when i play the .dem files, i can then record them on fraps. And Have them as .avi/.mpg files.

But all i need is to play the .dem files first! Which i am unable to do sadsadsadsadsadsad
