I have watched a lot of anime, and I prefer dubs. I watch anime for entertainment, and I don’t enjoy reading subtitles. Further, I know many people complain about bad English VA, but seriously? Dear god, some of the Japanese VA make me want to claw my ears off.

Now, I can understand if someone walked in on me watching certain scenes, I’d rather it be in subs. When a character says something really dumb or corny, I’m sure it’s less embarrassing to be watching a “foreign film” than a crappy “cartoon." This isn’t a problem for me though.

Butchering of 4Kids One Piece aside (which I really didn’t even find to be that bad), I can think of no example in which I’d prefer to watch subs no matter how bad the VA was. The only reason I’d watch subs is if the show were really good but would never be dubbed.

Oh, as for sex jokes and censoring, it seems to me that dubbing companies frequently add them in where they weren’t before to spice up the shows.

I do both, sub and dub. I prefer dub over sub, but sometimes I can’t wait for it to come out in dub. But not that I don’t watch it in dub once it comes out.

i don’t think that the animators wanted you to read the entire show. I would think that they didn’t put all that time into the animation just for you to read.

then again some voice actors suck. as well as the cutting and editing. but hey maybe we should all learn Japanese and then stop all the stupid debating. Well then again i’m pretty sure someone could find something to B*tch about.

I like English sub, way better then english dub. Most of the time when they dub it, they take out tons of the plot. They make every thing g rated, which isn’t really that bad, but all the voice actors do is yell. In Japanese Dub they give more feeling. Even if you don’t read the subtitles, you understand what’s going on (in general) from the moods they express.
The only anime i like English dub is Fruits Basket, mostly because io hear that version first, and i like Yuki’s voice better in the english dub.
Fma wasn’t that bad of an english dub, but if you compare it to the Japanese Dub it sound awful.

Well I blame the prodcution companies who decied to dub it that way it’s not the Voice overs fault it’s the ppl behind them that decied to put that person in they should more likely listen to how the original sound and try to match it up but u do think that someone famous really would sign to do a anime voice really if they ever do I would love to see who it would be It would be a change of pace probley suck also But One more thing who really want’s to watch normal shows pretty much about the usal stuff serial Killers , Hautings also reailty Tv and sometimes supernatural with little visual where as with anime u get to see ppls artistic look on ppl as cartoon charecters so stop hateing on anime And if u don’t like it Get ready there will be plenty more anime’s to come HEHE HAHAHA

If I have the chance ill watch it in English but,once it hits episodes that have not showed in America,but showed in Japan Ill watch it in English Subs.

Dubbed anime SUCKS! It is for the un-educated masses... Dubbed anime is like buying French Wine that was made in California! Anime is Japanese and it should be watch and appreciated for what it is... Japanes. I hate Dubbed movies... if the orginal is English then leave it like that ... if it is Japanese... leave like that. If you like Dubbed anime... then you don’t like anime at all, because anime is Japanese!

They dub and rape our shows were just returning the “favor”.

funimation dub is the best they are way cool they stick to the origonal when it comes to animes iff u watch funimation dubs you will love dubs even more!!!

No, not just voices, animation quality.

so what i take away from reading the posts here is that people who like dubbed versions are either

a) lazy
b) dont care about the the characters and atmosphere as it is in the original at all

there are some, very very few good dubs, but i have not come across one that was better than the original.

plain censoring and “localizing” and therefore alienating the whole show aside, voice actors for dubs more often than not lack the passion of their japanese counterparts. character portrayals lack emotion and authenticity, appear dull and out of place.

often the differences between dub and original are so grave that it would be insulting the work of the original producers to call it the same show. people that can appreciate cheap immitates such as these have very low standards or are plain indifferent and not appreciative of what anime actually is at all.

im such an elitist for not wanting to support the total destruction and devaluation of the great work that the japanese have done. really, shame on me.

I semi-grew up on the one Piece Dub(not counting early toonami days)...4kids does ....leave a lot to be desired(SonicX, I just went through it a bit, and see that it could be a bit better)

However, I actually LIKED things such as the concept of a bad@$$ who sucked a lolipop while beating up people..
The Voice actors, are a MATTER of preference..i had no problem with anyone But, Luffy was a iffy..

How he “Should Sound” if he’s “french: or “italian” -if he needed to sound French or if the Japanese don’t know how to settle on a character design for a high-established chracter...etc~...How 4kids did NOT introduce him as a badass, but a wimp >:/(when he was in more 4kids episodes than Funi currently has dubs of him)

DBZ, might i Add...perhaps Funi’s BEST dubbing. Ocean Seemed to be sub-par.

The problem is ther series will start to look like others if everythign is handed off to a select few. If Funimation got a hold of Sonic X, it WOULD turn into a DBZ stylized show.(doesn’t need that, too many “ripoff” cuukoos out there) Anyone who has seen the full Funi OP dub knows they borrowed things from sound effects to graphic designs for energy “beams”.

I prefer hearing things in English, and I, actually hear the motion in dubs. Must be me simply watching good dubs.

The english dub is okay depending on the anime and era it was dubbed in. The further you go back the crappier the dubs get. But I digress some peeps prefer the subs I can go either or

4kids did Shaman King okay in my opinion

Anyway I saw 4kidsOne Piece dubing first, and i was aghast because people were attacking things from the theme song to the voice acting.

I noted that the Funi dub of 4kids has some elements that are ...similar to their DBZ dub. When Eneru does dome energy attacks for example, it’s the same energy blasting sound Funi used for DBZ.

4kids also had really decent music.

I mentioned how Sonic X(only 4kids dub as of today), now that I saw a solely-done 4kids show, could be improved. I also mentioned that it would pick up elements from anyone else who dubs it. Like if Funi got ahold of it. It’d get their “touchup”

I do wonder if the dub for DBZ is better than the subs.
I guess it’s Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat vs whatever the original voice actors were.

Oh, and i was ranting about how recently somewhere, i got into a huge fight online over if Dracule Hawkeye Mihawk was protrayed correctly by 4kids, or if Funimation didn’t handle him right, etc,etc,etc

4kids did a lot of stereotyping. They just used stereotypes to voice them. If you listen to the regular characters you’ll get none of that. The only good voices that I can think of belonged to Zoro and Smoker from 4kids. The rest were terrible, but I guess 4kids making them throw out lame jokes every two seconds kind of ruins and acting ability one may have.



And Funi didn’t mess with the audio. All of it is the original Japanese. They did nothing to make it like DBZ. They just used a couple of the actors that they use for many of their animes that they handle. And 4kids music was horrible. I quite disliked it. No emotion, melodramaitically fake, and it ruined serious moments. I saw a lot of 4kids too, but it’s no comparing it to the original.

P.S., Funi’s Mihawk is my favorite. Followed by the original, and the stereotypical voice for Mihawk is last. I think Funi did a great job with him. In fact, I think they’ve done an excellent job so far.

And YYH was great as well. So was FMA. But as I was saying, many people like the original more because they put the most emotion into it usually. It gives you the authentic feeling of how it was meant to be portrayed. Not all dubs can capture that.
