Pokemon was the shit back in the day. Now its a a piece of shit. Ash should be annihilating everyone he faces but hes still a noob even after going through 3 regions!

I’m pretty sure it’s One Piece in Japan.

well...for younger kids in japan out here it would be
pokemon
anpan-man
my neighbor totoro

for kids below teens:
naruto
dbz
one piece

for teens and above:
suzumiya haruhi
lucky star
gundam
rozen maiden

(i occasionally visit this place called akihabara in tokyo, where otakus get their goods like dvds, book, games, soundtracks, etc.)

Death Note seems to have a certain power that makes even Anime haters love it.

In America: Dragon Ball / Z / GT, Yu-gi-oh Pokemon, YuYu Hakusho
- Dragon Ball Z outperformed Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh (#4 program on all cable)

In Asia / Japan: One Piece, Dragon Ball, Mobile Suit Gundam, Crayon Shin-chan
- Dragon Ball was the #1 animated tv program on all TV in the '90s, today it is One Piece

In Mexico: Dragon Ball / Z / GT, Pokemon
- Dragon Ball was among the biggest cartoon properties in Mexico in the late '90s-2003

The anime of Naruto didn’t sail very high in the United States, or other parts of the world, as far as I know. Even in Japan, it’s fallen off of TV’s top 10 programs. As it’s been seen ... reruns of Dragon Ball even outperform Naruto.

Well that’s a load of bullcrap. Dragon Ball Z’s demographic was larger than all of the ones you listed. It attracted tweens; boys, 9-14, and males 14-21, college age animation buffs.

So if college students were into Japanimation, it was probably Dragon Ball and none of the ones you listed, other than maybe Gundam.

DBZ was the top franchise for 20+ years until new animes like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and Fullmetal Alchemist came out.

Well DB is still popular today, not to the extent that it was a couple of years ago but it’s still pretty impressive considering how long the series has been out.

Dragon Ball Z still outsells Naruto and One Piece in the United States, with DVD’s, games and other merchandise:

In that case...

Through it’s video games, action figures, playing cards, remastered anime and 3-in-1 “big” mangas...it’s still the granddaddy of all mangas.

All hail the king.
