I used to use calculation myself but after awhile I just see him as pure overanalysis. Like what NF does with Naruto and Bleach probably in the author’s “that’s fast, it looks cool." How fast? As fast as the plot requires at the moment.
Some calculations are completely pointless unless it’s like a calculation for Gotenks' speed.
Analyzing panels is retarded, what’s the point of it knowing the exact speed of a character? With all inconsistencies out there shouldn’t intuition be enough to determine a character’s attributes?

So fans can say their characters are faster then other characters from another verses.
calculations are almost impossible to be got accurate. Unless measurements are given. For instance “Character A crossed the Atlantic in less than a second” If we know how big the Atlantic is we can put a guage on acharacter’s speed.

Kinda like Gotenks’s feat.
Somewhat, but even his feat can be vague. You can get a more solid number on him though.

The second crater is cleary greater then the first.
This chapter Kishimoto gives us clear frames of reference for Pain’s speed and ability
So at this point: http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/442/04/
Pain just used a Shinra Tensei and has to wait to recharge.
So from this point onwards Pain is on the defensive.

Gotenks would be at least 43% the speed of light from his feat. And since he was kind of casualy flying then hes casualy 43% LS. So id say that if he actually goes all out he would be quite above 50% LS. So hes like around 50 somthin % to 70 somethin % LS.
He also took a nap and wasnt even going full speed, he was kinda taking a jog. From this feat though, he would be at least 43% LS, but still, he wasnt trying and took a nap.

Not really that was joke since piccolo finds him right after he lands.
Piccolo said he had been looking for him. Piccolo would find him if he didn’t suppress his chi — or in this case slept.
Gotenks flew around the earth, in orbits at least twice as long as the circumference of the earth seven times in a single panel. We don’t know if he continued to fly around after that panel or how long time that took. It could’ve been anywhere from 29 minutes to a trillionth fraction of a second — this is why these calculations fail.
Based on intuition I’d say he’s pretty close to the speed of light and would in fact keep up with Superman — it has occurred that far slower beings have tagged him.
It’s not like battles like that can be determined with 100% certainty, no matter how many “facts” you manage to calculate.

Failure of human common sense and absolutely hilarious when people who clearly don’t know what they’re talking about do them.

Calculations in general for comic books and manga is absurd. Creators never think about technicalities when they’re drawing it. They’re thinking about how they can make it as exciting and cool as possible.
I think VS debates should primarily be done on feats and possibilities of future feats generated by what a character or set of characters have shown in the past.
This encompasses more then simple speed feats though, calculations on strength and durability is useless too. In example I’ve seen the calculation of Naruto’s physical strength from this forum and Naruto Fan. And think it’s extremely stupid to assume that Naruto can lift a Blue Whale when Tsunade struggled to lift a giant knife.
I believe people think to much into these things and assume that creators put as much effort into their work as fan put into analyzing it.

Not always.
I can agree to that, but 95% of the time it’s just stupid.
